Hello all!

So, before creating a thread, I searched everywhere and found people with almost the same problem as me, but not equal. So I thought it would be better to request specific assistance before messing something up.

Here's what's happening:

I have this asus laptop for like 7 months, he came with w 8.1 oem, during that time I did 4 or maybe 5 full restores (back to factory settings) and it all went smooth. But today, I tried to do it again (system is slow) but I've got a big surprise:

"Some files are missing. The installation or recovery cd from your windows copy will supply this files", a free translation since my OS is not in english.

I don't have this recovery media thing and as said, I already succed in the past restoring this PC. So I have no idea of what is happening...

I follow these instructions
:
- Open CMD
- Type diskpart
- Type list disk
- Select the disk with the recovery partition, using select disk # (mine was select disk 0)
- Type list partition

I found that everything is maybe as it should be, I have 2 recovery partitions out of 6 partitions in total (1 sized 900mb and anoither 20gb)

What should I do?

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Windows 8.1
command prompt(admin)
Type> diskpart

type> select disk 0
type> list partition
type> list volume
(post a pic)

you will see a lot of volumes without drive letters assigned..
Now find the 10-20GB volume #
type> select volume # (# being the volume number without a drive letter)

type> assign letter=r
you can now Browse thru R and find Install.wim or Install.swm(s) - those are your Factory recovery Images..

type> exit (to exit diskpart)
type> reagentc /disable

now, assuming the install* file(s) are on "R" and in a folder called "RecoveryImage"
Note: Change "drive letter" and "folder name" below to suit your system setup

type> Reagentc /Setosimage /Path R:\RecoveryImage /Target C:\Windows /Index 1

type> reagentc /enable
reboot PC

Thanks a lot for your help KYHI, I'll give it a try later. I was also thinking about doing a clean windows 8.1 install (to get rid of those crap programs that usually come on an OEM installation).

Using this tutorial: http://www.eightforums.com/installa...tted-genuine-windows-8-lenovo.html#post330277

Do you think it should work or it is possible that this might mess something?

following the guide you linked - it will remove the factory recovery and the factory bloatware..

Thus you'll be doing a CLEAN install.. Many Prefer a clean install over factory bloatware..

if you follow my steps - you can then create a factory recovery drive ( control panel > recovery > create a recovery drive )
save the usb for later use if you ever wish to return to factory settings,,,

once you have the factory recovery on usb - follow the guide and clean install windows 8.1

The 'ASUS Backtracker' programm does the same thing (Back up the factory recovery image option) or it is more reliable to do the way you said?

I am thinking that since he already had 8.1 OEM installed and that reset worked several times before..

The factory recovery image is missing or he created another partition..

Usually 8 to 8.1 upgrade knocks out the recovery option by adding a second recovery tools partition - Asus backtracker fixes that..

Thus the needed suggestion for posting a pic of diskpart and searching for install.**m

I used the backtracker but on the usb flash there is no such thing as setup.exe, is something messed up?

As far as I can tell it is all normal (the folders), expect for the setup.exe that is not in there.

To correct the missing Registry sources try the following.

Open Action Centre, Recovery, System Restore, tick Show More Restore Points and look for the following Auto System Restore. highlighted on the System Restore attachment.

After you have re signed in you must restart the computer for the update to take place.

Since you said about registry, I have a habit to always use registry clean function on ccleaner. Could it be possible that this habit trigged all this? If so it is really unfortunate...

Another question, that issue could be caused by a virus?

And to finish it, following the tutorial of how to instal windows 8.1 oem. I tested the pen drive and I could reach the part to format drivers, create partitions, etc. It all worked out (i mean, related to the UEFI key, if i format the windows will be activated right? I refer to the screen of asking for a key, as far as i know it happens right after you click install and when it happens you can't even reach this screen where all the drivers show up, or am i mistaken?)

Thanks a lot guys, you are helping me so much

I think i'll clean install it, it seems there are too many problems here to troubleshoot.

I just have 1 question about the clean install, it is about the license. I tested the usb flash and I could reach the part to format drivers, create partitions, etc. Related to the UEFI key, if i format the windows will be activated right?

I'm not sure if i'm doing it right (related to UEFI key), at what point should I be seeing a screen asking for a key (indicating that I do not have the version of windows that matches my uefi key)? Or should I've seen it already?

Not sure if I was clear enough

diskpart
select volume 5
assign letter=r

then use windows file explorer to find Install.wim or install.swm

If you downloaded the media from MS (link in sig below)

It will read the embedded product and will not ask..

if it did ask it, Usually would ask for the key before allowing you to clink install

the partition was empty (!), even though it says there's only 8gb left out of 20

weird thing, gonna do a clean install cause this is totally messed up

thanks a lot for your help mate
