    Dual Boot Woes

    Hello,

I currently have Windows 8 running on my old laptop. I tried to install Ubuntu alongside but it failed part way through. Now there is a boot option when I start up my laptop to boot in Unbuntu or Windows 8 but Ubuntu won't actually start.

Is there a way to remove this option and all fragmented files that may be left?

    Thanks,
    Caleb Watson

Did you use wubi or a live CD for installation of Ubuntu? If Live CD, which boot menu are you seeing when your laptop starts, Windows 8 or grub?

You should be able to remove the boot entry with bcdedit, from within Windows 8; you'll just need the identifier. With regard to removing the leftover Ubuntu installation files, I assume you were installing to a separate partition? If so, you can simply format that partition.

To help identify which entry to remove from the boot store:

    In Windows 8:

    1. Open a a command prompt with Administrative privileges
    2. Type bcdedit <Enter>
    3. Post the results here

The problem can be solved very easy - download and install Visual BCD Editor - Windows 7|Vista
Two icons are installed "Visual BCD Editor" and "Dual-boot Repair".
    Run "Dual-boot Repair".
    Click "Automatic Repair" and confirm.

    Reboot.

    That's it.

You can remove the entry for wubi by using the following:

    bcdedit /delete {80a8a5b2-3124-11df-a75d-00238b542772}

    Reboot.
