Hi! I was interested in installing the consumer preview, but apparently I'm unable to because my hard drive already has four partitions/volumes (I don't know the difference, sue me):

(C:)
HP_Tools
Recovery (D:)
SYSTEM.

What can I do in order to install Windows 8/dual boot with Windows 7?
Thanks!

Hi,

It is not "easy" to suggest what to do, because you may want something different than what I'd suggest.

Fact: Installing Windows 8 will wipe out your ability to restore the pc from the manufacturer's image.
For this reason, I recommend you make a backup of the drive or at least the partition where Windows 7 is installed to, using Clonezilla. (Even if it doesn't have the booting files, it's not a huge deal.)

If you take a screenshot of your Disk Management screen in Windows 7, I can outline for you what I would do if it was my machine.

Another idea: After making the backup of Win7 partition, uninstall any 3rd party antivirus and/or firewall. Then simply upgrade the Windows 7 to Windows 8. To do that, copy the entire contents of the mounted .iso to the hard drive. Then run setup.exe in the Sources folder.

If you hate Windows 8 or something, you can then just put the Windows 7 image back to the partition. You won't have any issues with setup though, because we will help you if you run into any funk.

Another solution will be to remove the HD and Install Windows 8 on a new HD, single OS. After you decide witch one to keep, you can use the extra HD in an external enclosure for backup purpose. Me the dual booting thing I don't believe in it.

One of the reason I like my dv9720us has two hard drives and I always install fresh on a formated drive and take the Windows 7 drive out while I am testing other operating systems. I have the option of slipping the other drive back in the #2 slot to transfer files to the main c drive. So far so good on my Windows 8 install just the coprocessor issue like before. I was going to use the SSD but I said no no if I screw up the install I will have to do a clone back to Windows 7 of the HD so I wiped and tranfer all my backups of the HD to external and then installed 8 on the regular HD and works great. Sorry for some people having problems with dual boot I used to go that route till I started using other systems. I also tried the latest release on my virtual machine first before install in Laptop.
