update win 8.1 but not media center

    Hello,

I want to thank you all for helping me out with my related issue and reviewing my post. Okay i just got this windows 8.1 laptop. It just had a standard edition of windows 8.1 then i added features going from 8.1 standard to 8.1 pro but i am not getting windows media center. Not sure what i need to do, i am fairly new to windows 8. Please help!

Media Center is a further add-on to that. You go to Add Features, which you probably already did to get Pro, and enter a Media Center key. It will only work if you are already running Pro. I scored a bunch of them when Microsoft was offering them up for free, for a limited time offer. My laptop came with 8 Core so I used one of my TechNet keys to upgrade it to Pro through add features. Then I did it again entering a MC key. Pro has to be activated for it to work.

EDIT: Was your upgrade key a Pro Pack Key? I think those will give you Media Center along with the upgrade to Pro.

Hello Javanoob, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yeah, Media Center will need to be purchased and added to Windows 8/8.1.

Yes you'll need to pay for a key for Media Center. Be advised that Windows will try to activate with the media Center on the first reboot after installing it. If it fails activation there is no easy way to go back to just Pro. Also Media Center keys can only be used on one PC and are not transferable. Don't be tempted to try and hunt up a free one on the internet. It could come back to haunt you.

That is terrible because windows 7 came with it already and now you have to purchase it.

Yes, if it fails to activate, you have to go back to Pro. To do that you will have to reinstall Windows 8. There was a trick to go back, it may even be a tutorial, Brink may know. Anyway, if it fails to activate you can't use system restore to go back and there is no option to uninstall Media Center in add remove programs. You can turn Media Center off in add or remove windows features but that won't fix the activation issue. That's why I gave you the heads up. If you buy your key from reputable source it shouldn't be an issue.

EDIT By the time I type this in Brink will have likely posted it but I'll do it anyway, Media Center - Remove and Go Back to Windows 8 Pro

That should be fine, it should be right from Microsoft.
