Can the $40 Windows 8 upgrade patch straight to 8.1?

I bought the $40 Windows 8 upgrade when they first began offering it a while ago. I haven't activated it yet so I'm assuming I can still use it (no expiration or anything like that right?). I was wondering if I could upgrade directly to Windows 8.1 though (I'm a little confused by some of the information here). From what I understand I want Windows 8.1 Update. Will I need to pay more if I'm upgrading from Windows 7 > Windows 8 > Windows 8.1 Update? Just very confused at this point and looking to understand what's what before I go installing stuff:) Thank you for any help.

You should be able to without any extra costs.

I upgraded 8 OEM to 8 Pro with the $40 Propack & then to 8.1 Pro through the Store free.

Great, thanks for the confirmation! I was having a tough time trying to find a clear answer:) In your opinion is it worth upgrading from Windows 7? I'm not too worried about the difference in UI as I could get familiar with that (and from what I hear there are skins to replicate Win7). More curious as to whether its technically a better OS than 7 i.e. stability/compatibility/safer in terms of viruses to warrant an upgrade.
