Hello. I recently encountered with a problem with laptop and I formatted everything so now I have a clean laptop without any system running ( before I had windows 8.1). So I tried to do a fresh install of windows 8 but when I get to the part where I have to choose my drives I click on drive 0 partition 1 and it says it's too small. So I tried to extend the partition but an error pops out and says " we couldn't enlarge the selected partition". Please help. !! I have an Asus laptop with uefi.

Thanks for the link. I checked it and I did everything like it says but the only problem is that I don't get 4 partitions but I get only one and it's the primary partition, I could just install It from there but it says that I have only 300 mb and when I try to extend the partition I get the error that says we couldn't extend the selected partition.

I don't quite remember because windows wasn't working and I was in recovery mode. After that I think I used cmd and went to disk part and formatted disk 0 from there. So I deleted all my data and windows, so basically like a fresh pc.

ouch, basically like a new pc with out need recovery options ,except a windows recovery dvd or usb .

there are like ways to fix this ,but i have never experienced this my self so i suggest searching the tutorial section a bit to see if you can find info on getting the rest of the drive space back ,if it had it here with me i would remove it a put it into my usb drive dock and format it somehow ,and start over .

So I tried to do a fresh install of windows 8 but when I get to the part where I have to choose my drives I click on drive 0 partition 1 and it says it's too small.

Quote from this post:

On the Where do you want to install Windows? screen, you'll need to delete all of the partitions (see screenshot below). Select a partition and click on the "Delete" option for each partition.

Once you have deleted all of the partitions, you only see Drive 0 Unallocated Space (see screenshot below).

Click on the "Next" button. The installation of Windows 8.1 will begin. All the required partitions are created automatically during the install.

Well yeah. That's what I was doing the whole time. But I don't think you understood that I don't have any system running right now. When I boot my pc I go straight to Bios unless I put a usb. So I followed the process to install windows and then I get the error that says windows can't be install in the selected disk. Please check your media drive. I already tried to delete all the partitions and creating a new one but when I do that I get only one partition and it's the primary one but it has only 300 mb which means I can't install anything on it.

If you are indeed following the "clean install" guide, then you have one of a few possible issues (or more, but these are the most common):

1. It is possible that the USB device and the BIOS / chipset aren't playing nicely. I've got a few USB keys (PNY, Kingston, some others) that just will not install a Windows OS properly on some hardware, whereas my cheapo USB2 8GB Sandisk Cruzer has had zero problems on any machine I've ever tried.

2. You have a system running UEFI, but you are booting from a non-FAT32 USB device. You *cannot* use an NTFS-formatted USB device to install Windows on a UEFI-enabled system.

3. The hard disk could have been created as an MBR disk, but UEFI installation requires a GPT-type hard disk to boot Windows from.

4. You have existing partitions on the disk, and are trying to do a UEFI installation of Windows onto a disk with less than 3 partitions (which may also need to be formatted before use).

5. You are attempting to install a 32bit/x86 version of Windows, and UEFI requires a 64bit/x64 installation of Windows.

A proper UEFI install creates 3 partitions, all of which are required - the UEFI/recovery partition, the UEFI/Boot partition, and the Windows partition. If you don't have these precreated, you need to let Windows create them during install. You may need to boot into your Windows installation USB, press F8 or F10 (or Shift+F8 or Shift+F10) at the "Install Now" window to get a command prompt window, and run diskpart, select the hard disk, and run clean against it before attempting to install again.

If after using diskpart to clean the drive you still see a partition when attempting to set up Windows, then it's likely the protected recovery partition and a deeper nuke can sometimes be required to make it go away. Diskpart clean should be sufficient in most cases, though.

Does it allow you to create a partition there via the new button, and then select the new partition it created? Or does that also fail? It would seem that this device is potentially an MBR device instead of a GPT device (a screenshot of the list disk from diskpart might help us). Seems really odd though.

Yeah can create a new partition, but when I did it it creates a partition that is called primary and it has only 300 Mb. Which is odd. And when I try to enlarge it it fails

Is secureboot enabled in the UEFI bios? If so, can you disable it? It seems odd that it thinks the drive is 300MB, when it *knows* it is larger. We might have to use diskpart to create partitions before install, perhaps.

In diskpart:

- This selects the HDD, cleans it of all partition table, and converts to GPT type for UEFI usage:
list disk
sel disk # (where # is the number diskpart lists for the HDD from the "list disk" command)
clean
convert GPT

- This creates the first partition, a recovery partition (Windows will place the system recovery (WinRE) image here during setup):
create partition primary size=300
format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows RE tools"

- This creates the system / EFI partition required for booting a UEFI system (Windows will place the EFI boot files here and make this bootable during setup):
create partition efi size=260
format quick fs=fat32 label="System"

- This creates the MSR (reserved) partition, that Windows can use later for things like disk encryption. This is recommended to be created this way (and setup would do this on it's own, if it was working correctly on your PC):
create partition msr size=128

- This creates a "Windows" partition on the rest of the system - it is the last, and largest partition, and the one Windows will install to. You'd select this as the partition you'd want to install Windows onto in the GUI where you choose the partitions, going forward:
create partition primary
format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows"

Let's see if the above creates the correct partition structure. If so, you can try installing Windows onto the big partition...
