Yeah, I'd try to activate by phone with your key.

With the link I provided in post 2 - you would have only needed to run the installer.. IT WILL READ the embedded key..

No forum tricks, No generic key, no phone calls, no bs..

Actually the old post regarding this old method should be removed..

As it now just leads to more confusion and is of very little help anymore..

The New Tool to create windows 8.1 media is now all that is required, no matter what key OEM or Retail (windows 8 or Windows 8.1)..

Thanks, but actually it did not work, it did ask me for a key, which I used the generic key for Windows 8. I'm talking about activation here now. Also, my key that's embedded in my BIOS will not work, it's a flaw that HP realizes but failed to correct in a BIOS update. They got me another key that will activate, but will only work if I use the recovery disks. I needed the laptop back up and running for My wife so I used them for now. I'll try to download that media from that post in #2 in a few days.. Thanks for following up with me on this...

How could you say it did not work - if you have not downloaded the new software??

I did download that link, it's Called "Mediacreationtool.exe" When I went to go install it, it was installing 8.1. The key('s) I have only work for 8 and not 8.1

    • Edition of Windows.
You should also choose the same edition of Windows. This might be Windows 8.1 or Windows 8.1 Pro. To check what edition you're currently running, go to PC info in PC settings or System in Control Panel, and look for Windows edition.

While I do appreciate your help and the link, it just didn't work for me. Also, as I mentioned in an earlier post, the key I have embedded in my system BIOS, will NOT work no matter what I do. I had to call HP and they admitted that they have an issue. They were able to give me a new KEY which will work for activation ONLY and won't work if I go to install it. This is where the Generic Key came into play, but then it would not activate for me..

So I'm not confusing everyone here: I AM PERFORMING A CLEAN INSTALL AND NOT AN UPGRADE

I have created a Bootable USB Drive for this.

      1. When I go to install/Format it does this successfully.
      2. "Please enter key" I try a few of them from these forums including mine. It only takes the Windows 8 Pro key. (See Image below)
      3. After I am up and running on the Desktop I now need to activate it, Which I now use MY key. and it don't work.

It appears you are trying to install windows 8.1 Pro on a system that has a windows 8 core product key and not pro..

use the create media and download windows 8.1 - not 8.1 Pro

    try that

Thanks! I think I did choose Pro. But it only allows me to choose 8.1 and up, not plain 8... My Bad, I apologize.. I'll try that one next... You're saying it won't ask for a key, but I have one in my BIOS that won't work, and another one HP gave me, this key I will add to the Activation window when and if I get back up to my Desktop. I know there are ways to use Bootleg, but I have legit and want to keep it that way...Thanks for your help and showing me where my fault might lie. 4 (or more) eyes are better than 2....lol

That new download will install with and activate with Windows 8.0 or 8.1 keys. I've verified it myself. The 8.0 Core key on my laptop was used automatically to install 8.1 Core. Normally, if your PC has an embedded OEM key and you get prompted for a key, it means you didn't install the correct version. Like installing Pro when the PC only came with Core. Or you installed Core and it came with the Single Language version of Core. You need to match the exact version for the key to work. I've seen it suggested that changing some BIOS settings, like turning secure boot off, can mess up the OEM key detection. I haven't confirmed it myself though and don't know if its true or not.
