Need 8 ISO to attempt 7 to 8 upgrade. I HAVE 8.1 but...

Need 8 ISO to attempt 7 to 8 upgrade (then up to 8.1). I HAVE a purchased 8.1 disc and key, but...
learned that 8.1 will not allow keeping installed (7HP) programs and settings, only 'personal files', while 8 upgrade will (at least attempt to) do this.

Tried via MS site (install with just produce key), but guess what, 8.1 key not valid for 8.
Tried via MS site with 'borrowed' 8 key that 'checks out' but then 'check internet connection' comes up, but I am connected. (and to test, tried 8.1 and it proceeded past that point))

I want to not have to reinstall all my stuff, though the amount of effort I am putting in to avoid that is approaching point of diminishing returns.

Why not just upgrade to 8.1? What makes you think it will not work? Have you run the upgrade assistant?

I think you are planning on problems that do not exist.

re READ my OP. All answers to your question are in it. I am in forums as last resort because of the frustration I have with people that 'are just trying to help' that don't seem to have actually READ AND CONSIDERED THE OP, in spite of previewing my post several times to be sure I provided all needed info and yet be concise.

You only say you "learned that 8.1 will not allow keeping".

It is not true - you can upgrade.

Have you done it? I have. You can keep 'personal files' the UPGRADE option is misleading. I DID IT. THEN I researched it and found numerous confirmations of this ISSUE on the internet.

I will investigate that, thanks, but in meantime, here is the most compelling article I found after my first upgrade attempt failed.

tried suggested method and was hopeful when 'keep installed...' was offered as choice (it was not when installing from my disc), BUT, when I went to next.... see screenshot. I think MS has 'discontinued' any official ability to do this.

I HAVE a 8.1 installation disc. It does not allow for upgrade from 7 as I believe MS no longer does support. I have ordered an 8.0 disc for $75 off Amazon, will get Monday. so my 8.1 final destination will end up costing me about $155 (got 8.1 for $88). Was trying to figure out how to do without 8.0 media, but screw it, the aggravation factor is making $75 worth it.
