Need 8 ISO to attempt 7 to 8 upgrade (then up to 8.1). I HAVE a purchased 8.1 disc and key, but...
learned that 8.1 will not allow keeping installed (7HP) programs and settings, only 'personal files', while 8 upgrade will (at least attempt to) do this.

Tried via MS site (install with just produce key), but guess what, 8.1 key not valid for 8.
Tried via MS site with 'borrowed' 8 key that 'checks out' but then 'check internet connection' comes up, but I am connected. (and to test, tried 8.1 and it proceeded past that point))

I want to not have to reinstall all my stuff, though the amount of effort I am putting in to avoid that is approaching point of diminishing returns.

Why not just upgrade to 8.1? What makes you think it will not work? Have you run the upgrade assistant?

I think you are planning on problems that do not exist.

You only say you "learned that 8.1 will not allow keeping".

It is not true - you can upgrade.

Have you done it? I have. You can keep 'personal files' the UPGRADE option is misleading. I DID IT. THEN I researched it and found numerous confirmations of this ISSUE on the internet.

tried suggested method and was hopeful when 'keep installed...' was offered as choice (it was not when installing from my disc), BUT, when I went to next.... see screenshot. I think MS has 'discontinued' any official ability to do this.

That article refers to a different (older) tool and installation method

I just realized the links provided are how to's

here is the tool link

Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help

I HAVE a 8.1 installation disc. It does not allow for upgrade from 7 as I believe MS no longer does support. I have ordered an 8.0 disc for $75 off Amazon, will get Monday. so my 8.1 final destination will end up costing me about $155 (got 8.1 for $88). Was trying to figure out how to do without 8.0 media, but screw it, the aggravation factor is making $75 worth it.

Why not just save your data then do a Clean Install of 8.1 then install any programs you need or want?

I guess I'm asking why it's so important to keep installed programs from Windows 7? Even the upgrade to 8.0 is going to lose some of them.

Please post back after the 8.0 upgrade and let us know what programs survived it. Thanks

I ran the compatibility advisor when trying a suggestion above, and very few of my programs or devices failed, with a few more just needing updates. So I expect most to survive, but will report back.

Clean install would involve hours of reinstalls.

Those are mostly Windows programs that survive, not third party. The registry links go away so still have to re-install if you want proper operation.

interesting... that would figure with my luck. Interesting that WTP installed and kept all my programs, but that was OVER 8.1 on my laptop.

Friggin MS should make all these upgrades at least attempt to keep user programs... they wonder why people don't want to upgrade, ha.

8 discs arrived and installed over 7
ALL programs were retained. I only had to uninstall 4 driver installations to be able to do so and after upgrade to 8, appropriate drivers were installed automatically.

Then I upgraded to 8.1 and here I am. Even having done the entire process twice due to a cloning booboo on my part, it still took HOURS less time and unmeasurable aggravation reinstalling all my programs (finding them and associated licenses etc., come on man)
