    Problem installing

    Hi-

I tried to install Windows 8 on to a new partition on my PC several times, It appears to install correctly but after it has installed and restarted, and gone through the registry setup files etc the screen just goes black and nothing happens.

I've tried 'refreshing the PC' - this doesn't work.

    Anyone got any other ideas?

    Thanks,

    Tom

    Hi,

    1) If you have any 2nd monitor or tv connected, disconnect it/them and reboot.

    2) If that's not the problem, boot to safe mode and uninstall the video driver using device manager and also check the box to delete the actual driver too. Boot to desktop and install latest from manufacturer's site.

Alternatively, you can install the latest driver while in safe mode, using the device manager.

If you're dual booting with Windows 7, then same as always. F8 on the keyboard while booting up, but after you've chosen Windows 8 from the boot menu.

No. Choose Windows 8 from the boot menu. The instant you hit Enter to do so, start mashing on F8.

Out of curiosity, which video card? (You could also check in bios to make sure your onboard is disabled as it should be, if using a card.)

    Still not working...

Tried all safe mode options - In safe mode, it just says 'windows cannot finish installing in safe mode' then in normal more it just goes black...

Cannot remember what video card - I am using a Dell Inspiron N5110

You can look in the device manager of Windows 7 to see which card you have.

Did you already disable the onboard video in the motherboard bios? (If you attach your monitor to the motherboard port, it will probably show well, if you didn't already.)

Anyhow, if needed, you can use this method to install and then access the device manager to disable Windows from putting the driver:

Alright, that IS the onboard graphics so no need to disable anything at all. The issue you're having might not even have anything to do with graphics itself. It seems like the install is just failing for whatever reason, but I really can't say why or how at all.

Perhaps if you take a screenshot of Disk Management while in Windows 7 and attach it here, it may prove helpful.

(Right click Computer shortcut on the Start menu or desktop, choose Manage. Disk Management will be in the screen that shows. Try to show all the information possible.)
