"Some files are missing. Your Windows..."

"Some files are missing. Your Windows installation media or reovery media will provide these files."

So I've encountered the above message in an attempt to Refresh my laptop. It's an Asus laptop which came pre-installed with Windows 8 that I have updated to Windows 8.1 via the Windows Store several months ago.

How exactly do I acquire said files? I'm quite confused as there are several methods of solving this issue but I'm afraid many of which are for certain systems. I've downloaded called "mediacreationtool.exe" which prompts for a USB drive and states that it would download files, however I am not certain if this will address the issue.

Could anyone point me to the right path?

First, make sure everything you don't want to lose is backed up.
Next, create the Windows 8.1 ISO for the version you have, forget about Windows 8, the 8.1 will install using the embedded Windows 8 key.

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create

Clean Install using the DVD or flash drive you create from the ISO.

here is what happened your pc came with windows 8 and a windows 8 recovery image.. when it was upgraded to windows 8.1 it broke the link between windows and the recovery image.. Now it you want to recovery your factory windows 8 installation, we can restore the link. and tell reset to reset the factory image.. But it will update again to windows 8.1..

So you are just better off using that tool to download windows setup media and just install windows 8.1 and completely bypass windows 8... You will need to go the MFG's website and also download the drivers for your system.. Install win 8.1 install system drivers, download windows update, and then you can create a "custom refresh image" to use for recovery and reset..

One question though, will the bootable software from the media tool allow me to just refresh? I don't plan on factory resetting.

You can not refresh or reset unless you create a recovery image or. custom refresh image...
Right after you install windows, drivers and update.. create a clean system custom refresh image,

    add all your other stuff..
Now when you do a reset or refresh it refers back to the clean install custom image..

basicly, Unless the recovery tool has an image (.wim) file to refer to, it will not R or R

I've successfully refreshed using the .iso created by the mediacreation.exe tool. No complications so far. Thanks for your assistance on this. Also I noticed some changes that weren't present in an update-made Windows 8.1; such as close buttons when metro apps are open. Control panel access from settings. Really neat.
