I'm pretty sure at least one forum member has tried it, but it will be a really old thread and hard to find.
This tutorial uses the same method to remove WMC from 8.1 Pro so should let you revert to non-pro also - Media Center - Remove and Go Back to Windows 8 Pro

Ok so do I understand correctly that the 8forums 16077 link you have provided is to remove MC from win 8 Pro with MC and revert back to win 8 Pro. Because this sound like what I need to do albeit with 8.1 not 8. I don't own 8 and never have the original install on this PC was Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit OEM.

If so I assume I can just change the Product Name to Windows 8.1 Pro instead of Windows 8 Pro as in the tutorial?

I have the original install disk still so there's no need for me to create the install media.

Assuming I do this and it all goes wrong will I still be able to use my May restore image?

I guess you can guess what I'm thinking. Try to go back using the link posted and if that fails use my image.

Also many thanks for your help so far, it is very much appreciated.

EDIT: I have 83 Gb of 223 Gb available on my C drive. I think that's plenty but is that enough?
I would say you change ProfessionalWMC to Professional, and Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center to just Windows 8.1 Pro.

Yes, nearly missed the WMC extension bit!! Thank you.

Also I assume this will only affect my C drive, all other drives will remain intact? I have C - SSD with OS, some games and a few programs that I use alot; E - internal HDD for storage & programs; F - external drive for movies, photos, downloads, that kind of thing

Reading the tutorial, it shouldn't affect anything, all you files etc should remain intact. " When finished, your Windows 8 Pro should be completely identical to how it was before, except it will no longer have Windows Media Center."
You'll need 8.1 Pro install media though, from the looks of it. You can get that here, Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help

Thanks, that's how I read it too. Wouldn't my original install DVD do for the media?

I'm just making a direct copy of my C drive to the F drive (external) so I can refer back in case this should fail for some reason.

Is it a full install DVD or a recovery DVD? If it's recovery media it may not work.

Ok so took a few deep breaths and went for it.

All seems good. I've had an error message about a program (ROG Gamefirst) it wants me to re-install but other than that all seems fine.

    Time to road test!!

Thank you all so much for your help.

I'll report back after some testing

Seems I have some missing/ corrupted drivers. GamefirstII & GPU for a start so I'm sure I'll find others over the next few hours and days.

Had 50 windows updates which I'm running through now but otherwise all seems good. I'm certainly back to the OEM version anyway.

Many thanks for all your help everyone, it really is appreciated.

Hopefully that's all you find. Still better than having to start all over from a fresh install. Yeah, when I see somebody say they have the OEM version that usually means factory install and no Windows DVD. That's why I asked. I got side tracked on some family matters and was away from my PC for a while. Looks like you got it sorted with a minor glitch or two. Crossed fingers.
