Solved My Windows 8 Mistake

I installed the consumer version of Windows 8, and after playing around with it, I decided to remove it. So I installed Easy BCD and com e to find out Windows 8 did not install on a separate partition. So in other words it is not dual booting. So I might have to clean install my Windows 7. But first I would have to buy a exsternal drive to store 35 gigabytes of music, that is the only thing that I am worried about is the music. I am a pro at clean installing. I really, really regret installing Windows 8 on my laptop. I did use Oracle VM VitualBox, now I am mad as hell. I did not use the virtual machine right

Hi,

You can simply clean install and it will put all of your old files in C:\Windows.old

Just don't format or anything while installing.

Hello Spankondrums, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I think GMan meant to say to do a custom install instead since a clean install will wipe everything out. I would recommend that you backup anything that you do not want to lose to be safe though. :)

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Yep, true Brink. Thanks for that. I always think of clean = custom (meaning the same thing to me, incorrectly) because you end up with a non-upgraded install (fresh OS-wise).
I'll remember that for the future. Good catch. :)

Thanks guy's so if I custom install I can keep all my iTunes music, because otherwise 35 gigs of music is to much to be putting on a bunch of disks.

Yes, but I would recommend to back your music up to another HDD or something just to be safe though. There's always a risk of data loss, say a power failure or some other serious issue popped up during the custom install. Best to be safe than sorry. :)

Well all I see is system restore in Windows 8. I am trying to get back to Windows 7 restore. Windows 8 is not letting me get there. Windows 8's restore point is not going to take me there.

System Restore is not the same as a custom install. You will also not be able to revert back to Windows 7 with a restore point and system restore either. :(

This is why I took a system image of my Win 7 Ultimate setup before upgrading it to Win 8.

If it had failed (it didn't, BTW), I still had my complete Win 7 setup to fall back on.

Image backup is one of the best features of Vista/Win 7, but it seems that MS want to get rid
of it in the final release of Win 8.

IMO, that's a fail.

    Borderline pathetic.
This is why I aways have my disk with three partitions:

C: (50 GB) - For Windows
D: (200 GB) - For documents, photos, videos, software...
E: (50 GB) - For trying other Operating Systems

Plus I keep backups in the cloud and portable memories of every important file. My entire music collection for instance is on Skydrive (25 GB Free).

I can hardly lose anything. I do clean reinstalls every few months just to get rid of garbage, possible viruses, something working wrong, system slowing down... It takes a couple of hours for leaving everything the way it was before.

I did my Windows 8 installation wrong so it is not dual booting, it has intergrated into Windows 7. And my recovery/installation is on a partition on the hard drive. I need to do a custom install but Windows 8 seems to have made this harder. What are the steps that I should take to get my Windows 7 back ?

Spankondrums,

Could you post a screenshot of your Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) window first to see what you HDD layout is, and what options you may have?

Here is what I found over at Microsoft

No. To go back to your previous version of Windows, you'll need to reinstall it from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC; typically DVD media. If you don’t have recovery media you might be able to create it from a recovery partition on your PC using software provided by your PC manufacturer. Check the support section of your PC manufacturer’s website for more information. After you install Windows 8, you won’t be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows.

Yep, that's true. However, depending on your HDD layout, you might be able to dual boot with Windows 7 if you wanted to.

I repeat - a screenshot of your Disk Management would be really helpful. Because you may have the option to shrink your C partition and create a new partition to where you can move your music. Then it would be safe from a new install.

You can shrink your HDD and create a second partition from within Win8 using Disk Manager (right-click Computer -> Manage). Transfer your music to this second partition along with other files you want to keep and make a clean install of Win7 on the first partition.
