Replace Vista with 8 on dual boot PC

I have a Vista and Win 7 dual boot desktop. I want to replace Vista with 8. Is it just a case of booting into Vista and running the 8 install DVD as I did when I upgraded to 8 on my Win 7 laptop? What chance is there of the process screwing up booting into 7

    Do you recommend any precautions?

    Upgrades can be problematic sometimes.

You could triple boot instead - install 8 to another partition.

Or you could make an image of Vista partition - using free macrium/paragon/whatever your imaging app is - so you can always put it back.

Vista is a great o/s and Win8 is just a trial.

You might like win8 - you might not.

There is a thread about it

The thread was closed because it was getting a bit heated.

That is very unfortunate - it is the best thread on the forum.

As I said in my OP I have installed 8 on 7 on my laptop. Apart from disk image should I make a bootable CD for 7 or will the 7 DVD suffice?

Simply run the upgrade setup.exe from the DVD (copied to a local HDD folder first). The upgrade one is inside one of the folders (forget off the top of my head), not the one at root. The one at root can only custom install which is not an upgrade. Brink has a tutorial on here somewhere if you care to search it.

There will be no problems with the dual boot and it will stay intact. In case of any troubles, we can easily help you out with anything. SIW2 and a few others happen to be really good with that.

I attach a copy of the disk layout for Win 7 and Vista. You will see that the D partition I created in 7 is showing as C in Vista. Do you recommend that create a Data partition in Vista and move my data folders there before doing the upgrade. I know that the upgrade should leave Users system folder alone but ... If it were me, I would simply perform the upgrade. If you want to back something up first, more power to ya. Go for it.
