Okay.Brink and others - I will request to please reply point wise.

1.Win 8.1 came preinstalled, its asking for activation, why is this a requirement when the OS is running smoothly,am i missing something or this is just for updates?

2.What if I don't activate and run the windows as it is.

3.What about formatting?i dont got a any recovery disc, though i can create one from "recovery drive",but does this have any limitations?how does it differ in installation process.

4.What if I need to do a clean install, where will get the Win disc(files) for clean install,as original Microsoft cd was not there?

5.I see it says "activate online" so I assume that once I activate the key cannot be used again as its already registered and used,so if i try to do a recovery thru recovery disc or a clean install and put the same serial, how will it be activated as the key has already been used before?

6.If my current Laptop gets damaged,Can I use the same disc to install on a my laptop as in that case i will buy a DOS based comp hence will save some bucks.

Thanks in advance for all your efforts.

Q1) Activation is required to make your installation legal. Think of it as proof of license purchase. You may be able to activate by phone instead.
Q2) If you don't activate, then Windows will eventually turn off features and nag you to death until you do activate it.

Q3-Q4) Since this is an OEM PC that came with Windows preinstalled, you could create a recovery drive (USB) with a copy of the recovery partition included on it to also be able to use to reinstall Windows if needed.

What brand and model number is your PC? I'll see what method they have for creating recovery media.

Q5-Q6) On OEM PCs, the product key is permanently tied to the motherboard and cannot be used to activate Windows on any other computer/motherboard. You will basically only be able to activate Windows 8.1 with that key on that specific laptop. The product key will embedded in the UEFI firmware chip of the motherboard and will be automatically detected and entered during the installation of Windows 8.1.

Go ahead and try to "Activate online" when you are connected to the interent to see if it will activate for you. If so, then you are good to go.

Hope this helps for now, :)
Shawn

Thanks for your reply.

Q1)
Activation is required to make your installation legal. Think of it as proof of license purchase. You may be able to activate by phone instead.
Q2) If you don't activate, then Windows will eventually turn off features and nag you to death until you do activate it.

-Did you faced this yourself or you are telling this anyways?if yes how many days will it give you to activate??

Q3-Q4) Since this is an OEM PC that came with Windows preinstalled, you could create a recovery drive (USB) with a copy of the recovery partition included on it to also be able to use to reinstall Windows if needed.
What brand and model number is your PC? I'll see what method they have for creating recovery media.

I have few issues on this

a-"Copy contents from the recovery partition to the recovery drive"-didn't get that
If i click that what will happen,I see you havent ticked that while creating recovering drive and in the screenshot below its showing system image recovery, getting confused whats the difference here?:

http://www.eightforums.com/attachme...sb-flash-drive-windows-8-advanced_options.jpg

b-"What if I need to do a clean install, where will get the Win disc(files) for clean install,as original Microsoft cd was not there?"As using recovery drive will also install all that unwanted bloatwares,so its always better to go with cleans install

-Again, when do a fresh install on the same computer it will ask for activation as its doing now,so how many times will it allow me to activate? As its doing online activation everytime the key is getting registered on MS server so there must be some limitations.

Go ahead and try to "Activate online" when you are connected to the interent to see if it will activate for you. If so, then you are good to go.

Hope this helps for now, :)

Q1) Perfect.

Q2) You usually have a 30 day trial period before needing to activate to avoid the nagging.

Q3-Q4) When you don't get the "Copy contents from the recovery partition to the recovery drive" option, then it means that you do not have a recovery partition, or one that will work with this.

Q5-Q6) You will be able to activate on the same PC forever. However, if you try to activate to many times too often, then you may have to activate by phone instead of online. Either way, you should have no issue activating as long as it's all legal.

If you know the brand and model number of your laptop, I can look up how the manufacturer says you can create recovery media that can be used to reinstall Windows if needed. If all else fails, the manufacturer should also have a way for you to be able order recovery media for free or at a low cost.

Q2) any practical experience like that?

Q3-Q4) When you don't get the "Copy contents from the recovery partition to the recovery drive" option, then it means that you do not have a recovery partition, or one that will work with this.

a)I have that option what i want to know is the difference between click/unclick

b)"What if I need to do a clean install, where will get the Win disc(files) for clean install,as original Microsoft cd was not there?"As using recovery drive will also install all that unwanted bloatwares,so its always better to go with cleans install

Q5-Q6) Researching on this, will comeup back on this.

You would want to check that box to include a copy of your recovery media on the USB. This will allow you to be able to reinstall Windows back to factory conditions with the USB if you should not be able to from the recovery partition.

It depends on your PC's model number, but here's a link from Lenovo below for more information on how to recover Windows.
