I want to migrate from w8 to w8.1

Hi, the last couple of days i m getting a windows update message saying that Windows 8.1 was ready to install and the computer was going to restart in 2,3,4 or later to complete the installation. It stated that the computer would restart 3 or 4 times and I wouldn't be able to use it for 30 -45 minutes. I chose later everytime to avoid the installation, but i think it s time to upgrade to w8.1 and i want your help to do it right.

Till now i didn t upgrade to w8.1 cuz i heard that some laptops had driver issues when they upgrade from w8 to w8.1 and some times, they keep rebooting after installed w8.1, so i decided to wait some time till microsoft solved all the issues and i could upgrade without any problem.

I went to windows compatibility center, downloaded the program to check compatibility for windows 8.1 in my laptop and i got that almost all my programs and drivers will work in windows 8.1, except for :

    Ralink Bluetooth PCle adapter

So i want to know what should i do,i heard that i can uninstall this driver and then upgrade to windows 8.1, so after the installation finished, i can look for a driver that work for my device in windows 8.1.

Another option is only disable this service before the upgrade to w8.1 and later enable it and search for a proper driver.

Should i make a restoration point before the upgrade or it won t matter at all ? Also should i be concern for any other driver or only for the ones that the compatibility program showed me as issues?

If something goes wrong my only option is to reinstall windows 8 or i have other options??

My laptop is a HP pavilion 14-e014la notebook PC, in the HP website i found this page with drivers that will work for my laptop if i upgrade to windows 8.1 :

Software & driver downloads HP Pavilion 14-e014la Notebook PC | HP® Support

Also anybody knows the proper driver for my laptop that could work in windows 8.1 or got a similar issue before migrate to windows 8.1?

If you need more info about my laptop just let me know, i ll reply asap. Hope you can help me passing through this process quick and safe as possible.

Thx in advance for your help.

Well you pretty much answered you own questions. the particular hardware you call out would be your Bluetooth adapter. HP pretty well lays it out for you. Tells you which drivers need to be updated before you upgrade to 8.1. For my Asus G75 I had to update most drivers but particularly the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi drivers which I had downloaded and had ready to install you should do the same. Update all the drivers for Windows 8 and download the Win 8.1 drivers to install after upgrade.

Thx for your advices, HP website give me the drivers i will need in theory but i read that some people after the upgrade tried to install the drivers for the devices in conflict with w8.1 from there and some times those doesn t work at all and start asking in forums which driver will fix their specific problem. That s why i m asking for the best way to proceed here, i m trying to avoid to reinstall windows 8 by all means after the upgrade.

I ll follow you advice and im gonna start downloading the drivers for bluetooth and WiFi from the HP website, but i wanna know if it s safer to uninstall the Ralink Bluetooth PCle adapter before the upgrade so no device will be in conflict with windows 8.1 this way or this move will mess with the upgrade to w8.1 in any way.

Also if there is a way to update all the drivers for windows 8 in one step or i need to go to the control panel and then to the device administrator and manually check the drivers one by one for every device.

Well yes I think I would intentionally download the latest drivers and install them one at a time. As to particular drivers for your particular Notebook or workstation I would take the advise on the HP Support Forums? One thing to keep in mind on a manufactures Support Forum mostly only people that have issues end up there. The Thousands of people that don't have issues never find it for the most part. However the trolls there will have a handle on what up with your particular Unit. My wife's HP Envy all in one made the upgrade with out issues. If you have your drivers correct before you make the attempt and new ones for 8.1 downloaded and accessible you should have no issues. After all millions of us upgraded to 8.1 with out issues.

Hey, guys I migrated sucessfully to windows 8.1, i didn t have any issue i just disable the driver that was getting pointed out by the windows compatibility program and all worked out fine. But i have a question, now when i check my restore system config, i notice that my driver C : is no longer protected by my restore system and none of my other drivers neither. Is this normal ? is there a problem if i enable my driver c: to be protected again, so i can create restore points like in previous versions??

Hope you can help me with this.

It's not normal if you had it working before upgrade but you can turn it on without problems later on.

Thx for your answer, i enabled the system restore function again and made a restore point without any issue, but i have a question, when i went to the system restore config it asked me for the maximum disk space it will use. So i set it with 3% of my HD (my HD has 500 GB), is that enough disk space to make it work properly??

BTW, my gamepad wasnt working at all after the migration, so i had to reinstall its driver and now works fine.

Last question, is there a fancy function or a new program that i should totally use now that i got windows 8.1??

I've set mine at 4 GB and that's enough for 3 or four points, don't see much of a point for any more. I also set it for OS drive only.
I don't know which kind of programs you are thinking of, if it's for maintenance, you don't need anything but there are few programs I have been installing for long time now. One is Total Commander with Free Commander as free alternative, makes file moving and working with together with unzipping much easier. Another one is Revo Uninstaller to uninstall programs without much or any trace left. A good third party AV and Malwarebytes for security, I don't put much faith in Deffender. One or two HW checking programs like CpuID HW Monitor and/or Speedfan are good thing to help with HW. Program called "Everything" can find any file on the disks in a fraction of the time windows does. Those are some of relatively small and free programs that can make life easier.

Ok, thx for the info about those programs, now checking my drive C: i found 2 new folders :

    c:\$Windows.~BT
    c:\Windows.old

Not sure if i can delete them or they are needed for the system, What should i do ??

Those are leftovers, you can check if there are some needed data files in Windows.old and then get rid of them using Diskcleaner in windows.
