Solved Clean install having 2 HDs (one of them is a backup)

Hello, right now I have Win7 and I want to do a clean install of Win8.1, but I have 2 HDs in my pc and one of them must remain untouched (it's my backup HD; also there is a Win7 folder, which I hope doesn't make confusion during install), so I want to format only the HD in which there is Win7 installed, how can I do it?

If you select the "Custom" option during the install you can pick where Windows is installed. You can also delete only the partitions you want. I keep my documents, pictures and music on a Data drive and install Windows to its own drive. I delete all the partitions on the OS drive while leaving the Data drive alone. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2299-clean-install-windows-8-a.html?

To be super safe, disconnect the drive you don't want touched until the install is done.

Best to physically disconnect the drive you do not want Windows installed on then start the computer and verify you have the right drive. Otherwise the boot files may be installed on the wrong drive. Also, sometimes people get a little careless and end up formatting and installing Windows on the wrong drive. On forums I have seen many cases where that has happened.

Thank you all, but I don't think I can physically disconnect it; the problem is how can I understand which is the one with Win7 installed (and not the one in which there is the Win7 folder, remains of a previous RAID).

A screen shot of your expanded disk management screen may help. Is it running in RAID now? If yes striped or mirrored?

I meant I'm not capable of disconnect it!
It was in RAID 1 (mirror), not anymore and don't want to re-enable it.
For the screen, I don't want to enter so far in the installation process and abort it, sorry

I was thinking I could mirror the HDs myself, so that it won't matter which one I'll format..but there are 2 System Reserved partition, is this a problem for a clean install?

It looks like Windows 7 is on Disk 1, so I would unplug Disk 0.

Then you can install Windows 8.

All you have to do is pull the power cable off of that hard drive, then turn on the pc and see if Windows 7 boots, if it does then you know you have disconnected the right hard drive, it`s the only way to be sure when you have 2 same size hard drives.

Unplug the computer and drain the power by holding in the power button for a bit, then touch a metal part of the case before you start.

If the bios is set to Raid you`ll have to change it to AHCI or IDE before you start the install.

May I ask why you want to install Windows 8 over Windows 7 ???

As AddRam said, unplug the drive you think is the data drive and boot up. If your current Windows install boots up you picked the right disk. The other way to confirm it is to look at the BIOS settings and see which disk is set as the first boot device. The SATA ports on the motherboard are numbered. Disk 0 should be a on a lower numbered port than Disk 1. If the SATA cables are plugged into SATA 1 and SATA 2, SATA I is Disk O and SATA 2 is Disk 1. When you have it so that only the disk you want to install Windows to is connected, do a custom install and delete all the partitions. Windows will create all the required partitions automatically. The system reserved on the Data drive can be deleted latter and the free space added to the current partition. You can't do that from disk management though for reasons I won't go into right now. Lets just get windows installed and running first.

Ok, I will try it in a couple of day.

Weird question in a Win8 specific forum! :D I MUST do a clean install, and I choose the last Win because it's newer.

There is a Windows 7 sister site to this one, and a Windows 10 sister site. Some members, like me, frequent all three. Some members have a preference for Windows 7 over say Windows 8 or 10. Some don't like 8 at all. That being said, some won't understand why you would want to install Windows 8 over Windows 7. Personally, I like Windows 8.1 so I say why not. I can't see myself ever going back to Windows 7. YMMV though. ;)

I have a problem: now I see only 1 drive!
I managed to backup everything to a third disk, so I wanted to clean both disk (in case of RAID overhead) and during install I clicked (image for reference) 3375d1330532205t-clean-install-windows-8-step7.jpg Delete to everything till I had 2 Unallocated, and with the first drive selected I cliked Next.
Now in This PC I see only C:\, in Taskmanager I see 2 drive but the second has Formatted=0, and in Disk Management I see in the section above:
only C:\ and System Reserved,
and under that:
Disk 0 and Disk 1 which is Online but Unallocated (in black).

Is there a way to solve this, maybe without reinstalling Win (and download update too!)?

Once you partition and format the second drive and give it a drive letter it will show up in explorer and be usable. You can do all of that in disk management.

Not really a weird question, I just asked why you would install 8 OVER 7, I mean a lot of people would/might install 8 on another partition or on a completely different hard drive, or machine, if you have one :)

You hit the nail on the head Kerry, but I`m slowly liking 8.1, but 7 will always be on my main box.

I`m hoping 10 will surpass both :D

The reason the 2nd drive is not showing up in windows explorer yet is because you deleted it down to unallocated space, follow Kerry`s advice and you`ll be fine.
