Solved Windows 8.1 not acting like 8.1

Hey guys/gals

Just installed Windows 8.1 pro on a newly bought SSD drive, and for some odd reason, even though it says 8.1 on the system page. it's not acting like 8.1 as it's missing some stuff. First off, there's no search window or option to turn off or restart the PC next to my name on the start screen. And when you open an app, there's no X or close button.

This is installed from install disk I got a while back, and I know the disk is good, because it's the same disk that I used to install the original copy of 8.1.

And yes, I have all the latest updates installed, and Windows is activated. Perhaps I'm over looking something?

Edit: Looks like I didn't have all the updates installed. Just download a 900 meg update, last 4 of the KB is 9355, which is apparently a big update for 8.1. Anyway once that installed, all is normal now.

I guess I figured Windows was finished with all it's updates and had checked back to see if there were more out. The other thing is I already have an 8.1 ISO so it's somewhat baffling some of these feature would have been missing since they were a part of the original 8.1 update

Anyway the issue is solved.

You didn't have Win 8.1 Update 1. That's where these came from:

It actually is

The disk I have is an actual 8.1 disk, with its own PID key. I got it through my school who is an active participant in Microsoft's DreamSpark program....



I can also get a copy of 10 there as well.

Anyway this is why the issue was a bit baffling to me.

Man I need to go back to school . I think if memory servers me right ztruker is correct, those features came with the 8.1 update 1

Hmm... I thought I mentioned I installed the OS from an 8.1 disk...

My point is I thought those features were already on the 8.1 disk, but it appears they were added after the release of the disk; this appears to have been part of the KB2919355 update I downloaded. Once that update was installed those features appeared.

As for ztruker's suggestion of restarting the PC, that was done because I actually thought that was the problem. Turns out it was a missing update.

Anyway all is good now.

However, you are only allowed 1 download AFAIK - so you may need to get a class-mate to get the integrated ISO for you.

Interesting that Windows 10 has been added.

I'm sorry but you lost me here

With regards to DreamSparks downloads, yes, you limited to one copy per item. That said, I'm not sure what that had to do with my post? And the version that's currently there is the one I downloaded awhile back - Windows 8.1 Pro.

Perhaps you're saying there's another disk with more updates included? If so, it's not on DreamSpark.

I may have misunderstood your initial question - but was pointing out the newer iso that includes Update 1...

The point of all these recent appends is that those features are not in Windows 8.1, they were added when Update 1 is applied to Windows 8.1. The Windows 8.1 you have does not include Update 1, which you proved by not having the features you mentioned.
