After microsoft ended it's support for XP and not being able to afford a windows upgrade right now I decided to install a Linux OS, I did look around relevant post's and a tutorial but I keep coming across conflicting advice. So My question being if anyone could help is whether or not I can install Linux (Ubuntu) on a drive that already has XP (*32) Home edition on it via a recovery partition the machine in question is a small 10" 'Netbook' with only 1 GB ram and a 120 GB hdd. Thankyou.

Yes, you can. Just avoid deleting the recovery partition if you don't have physical media, unless you're absolutely sure you're never going to want to reinstall XP, and if you ever want to get rid of Linux make sure to read up on how to also get rid of the Linux boot manager (usually Grub) and restore the Windows one.
