I have a dell laptop with winows 8 preinstalled on it. Soon after the purchase of my laptop I created recovery disk. It had only a single partion that time (Only C drive). Later I created a new partition 'D' from the existing space in C drive. Now my question is , can I still use the windows recovery disc that I created at the time when I had just one partition (just C drive)??

The Recovery disk should work, but most likely will DELETE your D: partition.

I think your recover disk are going to put your computer back to where is was when your first brought it home!
I would diffidently back up all my data regardless what partition it resides.

For future reference Disk Images are preferable as you can restore them and be back to where you were when you made the image!!

I don't have confidence in free back up solutions but Macrium Reflect has a free version that will create Disk images and restore them successfully. If you want to do file back ups you'll have to buy there paid for version. Acronis makes a good back up solution I think you have to pay for there's up front. Acronis will also create and Restore Disk Images. There are other out there Paragon Get some traction in this forum I have never used it. So I can't say anymore about it. In researching a back up solution be aware that some programs do not support UEFI GPT or Window 8. They will tell you that they do but when you restore a disk image it will not boot. Acronis was that way up until April 2014 that's how I discovered Macrium Reflect it works 100% with UEFI GPT and MBR and Windows 8 and has since 2012.

If you have created a Windows 8 system repair disc or recovery USB flash drive.

Note that reset does not remove your personal files, if you move your personal files off the C: partition to another partition. When the "Your PC has more than one drive. Do you want to remove all files from all drives?" screen appears, select the option "Only the drive where Windows is installed" (see screenshots below).
