Install Win 8.0 on newly replaced hard drive

My friend's hard drive failed on his Win 8 laptop. He never made any recovery media or images. Once I replace the hard drive, if i install Win 8 from a downloaded iso, will the Windows product key (it's not on a sticker that I can find, from what I've read it is stored in the mobo) be able to activate that version of Win 8? I seem to remember reading conflicting reports about whether or not this will work. Thanks

Thanks for the links, but I am having trouble following what is written. It seems like I need to create Win 8.1 installation drive, install 8.1 with a generic 8.1 key, then afterwards change it somehow to the original Win 8 key. Is that correct? Thanks

OK good. So after I install 8.1 using the generic key, how do I get the product key updated to the valid Win 8 key. The tutorials linked above say to get it using Produkey or Belarc before you nuke the old install, which won't work since the old hard drive has failed. I assume there is some way to direct it to look for the key that is stored in the firmware? Thanks

Thanks for the info. I'm still waiting for my friend to buy a new hard drive so I can try this.
