So should i download the windows 8.1 iso, put it on a usb and boot from usb to perform an upgrade? Instead of waiting for the updates on update center?

you do not boot from setup media to perform an upgrade - you just run the setup.exe from within your current version of windows

But yes, download and create both the windows 8.1 and windows 10 ISO
