Install question on new PC

I'd like to make sure my assumptions are correct regarding drive identification. I'm doing a custom install (currently no OS on the PC. Windows is only identifying the drives as Drive 0, Drive 1, and Drive 2 Partittion 1: My Book (this is an external storage drive). I'm assuming that because drive 0 is showing a total space of 238GB, that this is the SSD. The drive size of the SSD is 256GB. Is it normal for there to be 238GB remaining from a 256GB new drive?

It depends. Sometimes a small portion will be allocated (partitioned) as space for other things, like system reserved. You should be able to see all partitions once you attempt to install the OS, and can also delete/create others during that process. The system reserved and/or others will be automatically created based on what the system needs when installing.

Also, you are aware that they market storage to the consumer as more space than is actually present, right? For example, 250 GB brand new out-of-the-box SSD is actually only 232.83 GB real space. And these drives themselves may reserve some small space for its own use as well.

The install seems to be completed, but now I have a couple of issues. First, I was expecting to get a prompt for asking about an existing account. I already have one computer with 8.1 installed. It seems the install created a second account. The next issue is that I have no network access. I've connected the internet cable from the router and connected it to the lan port on the computer. What happened here with these issues?

Edit: I've reviewed the motherboard manual (Asus Z97-A). The light I have on the back of the computer is a steady orange meaning it's ready to wake up from s5 mode.

Why would you get a prompt asking about an existing account? Are you talking about a Microsoft account? If so, you can use your ms account to sign in to as many* computers/devices as you want. No prompts. It doesn't create a second account, but uses your ms account on both devices. You can also download previous settings you've used on another 8.1 computer via your ms account onto your new computer, for which it should prompt you, asking what you want to transfer. To be more clear, you can simultaneously use your MS account on all your [compatible] devices, for as much, and as long as you'd like, no problems. You can also deactivate your MS account on any device by simply logging into your email account and changing the corresponding settings and removing devices you no longer use/want. Or you can do this very thing on the device/computer itself.

Many computers require drivers before you can connect. You would need to transfer the driver via DVD (use em if you got em) or USB. I recommend getting the newest versions from the proper website, rather than relying on the DVD that came with the computer (which contains many of the other drivers as well). After that, you would use a USB stick to move it to the new computer and install it. You can then download all the rest of the drivers you need and install those afterwards.

If you fill out [all] your system specs, I can offer more personalized help for you. Let me know if you aren't sure how on this forum

Just updated the system specs. To get internet access, do I need to find drivers for the router (netgear n600) or the cable modem (Motorola surfboard 6141)?

The router, to which your computer connects wirelessly, never uses drivers. It is the thing that connects to your modem. Sometimes firmware is released for it, but it can be difficult to update without detailed instructions, and most of the time isn't so important to warrant even messing with it.

If you have a wireless adapter plugged into your computer, you should update both it and the LAN driver, even though you wouldn't in this case be using the LAN connection. If you are going the wired route, which it sounds like you are, you would only need the LAN driver. The LAN driver is on the ASUS website here: ASUS Service | North America - just type in your motherboard type (z97-a), select it, and it will list the drivers [for which you will first need to select your operating system - which is 8.1... either 32bit or 64bit].

Your Netgear n600 is indeed a router... you can leave it be. Remember that you'll need to use another computer to download, and then transfer, the LAN driver to the new computer. After that, you can use the new computer to download/install the rest of the drivers listed there. Let me know if you need any detailed help in this area.

Almost forgot, the modem should just be left alone completely, as it is only repaired by the company who provides your internet service (such as ATT). The router provides wireless internet and protects against a small amount of malware. As I mentioned, it connects to the modem. Both provide LAN connections, but I would use the router connection the reason I stated.

Windows is currently stating there are no network connections and none are available. Is downloading the LAN driver from Asus going to fix this?

Just to confirm, do you have a WIRED Lan connection... in other words, a cable (often blue, white, or black in colour) connects your computer to the back of the router, or do you have a WIRELESS connection... no cable, no wire?

You wouldn't have any internet connection at all until either the wireless driver is installed for a wireless adapter, or the LAN driver for the wired connection. Afterwards, you can freely connect to the internet, download updates, download other drivers, etc.
This is not true for all computers, however, because some come preinstalled with a basic driver that allows you to connect even before installing the latest drivers.

My desktop computer, which is the one this thread refers to, is a wired connection. The way the network is setup provided an Internet connection on the previous desktop I had.

So yes, then Just find the LAN driver online, transfer it to this computer from another to get it installed, and the rest is history :)

To make it simple, you can use the driver DVD that came with the motherboard to get it installed quick, then go online to get the latest drivers from ASUS

Well if only it were that easy.... I didn't anticipate needing a CD/DVD drive because I've been able to get by without one on my laptop. Now I have to do everything via a USB.

Edit: On the driver download page, there's a TURBO LAN and an Intel Gigabit driver. I assume I need the Intel Gigabit Ethernet driver?

Lol! I use mine often for games, movies, certain programs, etc, but most stuff you can simply get online. You can buy one for pretty cheap, less than $25 USD. But the USB transfer method will be perfect, and it ensures you get the latest drivers! :D
