    Windows 8.1 won't install

    Hello!

I have a problem with installing Windows 8.1 x86 on an older PC. Before I had Windows XP x86 installed on that system (it worked fine).

    PART I:

When I try installing Windows 8.1 (Professional, 32-bit) it all goes well up until after I create partitions, format and chose where to install Windows. Then it starts installing and then it reboots for the first time.

Then, when it's supposed to come back into the setup program it reboots again instead of coming into the program. And when it boots again it gives this message (I took a photo):

After this first happened I used DISKPART clean all command and tried again from the beginning - and it happened exactly the same! All I get after a reboot is that message.

Do you know what could be the problem (regarding that it happens after the first reboot in installation)?

    PART II

When I tried installling a 64-bit version of Windows 8.1 the installation went a little further but then rebooted and gave me this (another photo):

I've read that older AMD processors aren't compatible with Windows 8.1 64-bit. That would explain that error, but why the problem with 32-bit version?

Here are the specs of my PC:
BIOS: The latest - updated today
    CPU: DualCore AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ @ 2.40 GHz
    MBO: Asus M2N-E SLI
    RAM: 3 GB DDR2-800
    GPU: Geforce 9500 GT
    HDD: Seagate ST3320620NS (320 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA-II)

I reinstalled Windows XP now and it works flawlessly but would like to update to 8.1 (32-bit), please help.

    Thank you!

Try updating BIOS first, I have W8.1 humming on M2N-SE and Athlon 64 X2 5000 which is as close as possible to yours, using 64 bit version too.

I think the installation is not finding the correct driver for your older machine- probably the graphics driver, but, in my case, I had the option to install updates automatically in the initial installation, and it had not fpund the correct network adapter.
But, try this from the MS technet pages.

On the posted error screen press SHIFT+F10 and it will open up a command prompt window In the window, type "regedit"(without the inverted commas and hit enter.

    In the Registry Editor..
    Browse to....
HKLocal machine/SYSTEM/SETUP/STATUS/ChildCompletion, and after highliting childcompletion,on the right hand side check for setup.exe. if the value is 1 change it to 3.(by double clicking on setup.exe and changing the value shown in the box).
Close the registry editor and then the Command window.

Then click on OK for the error and the computer will restart and the installation may complete.

I've updated the BIOS to the latest version before I tried to install Windows 8.1 so that's not the problem.

I see that your M2N-SE only has Vista drivers on the ASUS support site, just like my M2N-E SLI. Did you use the Vista drivers with Windows 8.1?

Can this be done on the first error screenshot I posted or on the second? I'm guessing on the 2nd but I need a solution for the first one as I'd like to install the 32 bit version, not the 64 bit (each gives me a different error - as shown in my 1st post).

Didn't have to install or stream in any drivers, everything installed with windows, added video card drivers later on. Except for video card drivers for ancient NV 7300 all the drivers for W7 and Vista worked on W8 according to driver details. All had some really old dates.

Haha, that was it, this is the solution - the installation succeeded! Thank you!

I need some more help though - I opened the Device Manager and there's a lot of drivers missing:

I have the new video driver for the Nvidia card and the Audio driver for Vista which I got from the ASUS motherboard support site but that's all. How can I get the other ones, any idea?

    Now...

First I tried (unsuccessfully) installing the Video and Audio driver and then after a reboot the PC started rebooting by itself. I went into the safe mode and (this time successfully) installed both drivers there. But after the reboot the rebooting started again. Windows is only stable if I go into safe mode. I tried uninstalling, reinstalling drivers etc., nothing helps. Any ideas?

Here are the Device IDs of the missing frivers:

PnP Audio Device: (It's the C-Media Audio Driver - for Vista, that I downloaded from the ASUS site.)
    USB\VID_0D8C&PID_0201&REV_0010&MI_00
    USB\VID_0D8C&PID_0201&MI_00

Video Controller (VGA Compatible): (GeForce 9500 GT Driver - For Windows 8.1, I have the latest version.)
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0640&SUBSYS_055110DE&REV_A1
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0640&SUBSYS_055110DE
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0640&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0640&CC_0300

    Other PCI Brige Device:
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0057&SUBSYS_812A1043&REV_F3
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0057&SUBSYS_812A1043
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0057&CC_068000
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0057&CC_0680

    Unknown device:
    ACPI\VEN_ATK&DEV_0110
    ACPI\ATK0110
    *ATK0110

    Microsoft Kernel Debug Network Adapter:
    root\kdnic

    Please help...

Nevermind, I'm absolutely done with trying to install Windows 8.1 on this particular PC. XP stays, thank you anyway!

That's a shame. I just love a challenge like that.
I would go to the computer manufacturers home page and download and extract all their recommended updates - maybe for Windows 7 or before - and try and install in compatibility mode. It is amazing what Windows 8 will accept.
