    Error when Installing Windows 8

When I choose the VHD, after I use the command prompt to attach it, I get this error when pressing ok: we couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one.

I already have 4 partitions on my HDD, do I need to remove one?

    Thanks.

    Hi, welcome.

Yes, as I can tell you already know by mentioning "4" - there can only be 4 Primary partitions on a drive.

The command is probably trying to make a primary partition. So yes, if you remove one of the primary partitions so you only have 3 of them when making the command, it should work.

Hmm... Should I switch one to Logical? One partition is the system reserve, one is the main partition (C:), One is a Lenovo Partition(D:, Holds drivers), And the last one is a hidden back-up partition....

You could try making D: Lenovo partition into a logical one. To be on the safe side, I would backup any data on there you wouldn't want to lose.

A VHD doesn't actually create a partition, it's simply a file in a folder that can load an OS, as if it were actually installed on a real partition. So, the fact you have four partitions already, shouldn't make any difference. Are you using any sort of compression on the partition you're trying to create the VHD within?

Explain compression... As far as I know, no. The VHD is directly inside my C drive. Also GMan, using the default disk utility on windows, how would I do that?

VHDs are quite picky about their installation environment, anything like bitlocker, truecrypt or even Windows compression will cause it to fail during creation. You also need to make sure you have adequate free space, to accommodate the VHD, on whichever drive you choose. I gave my VHD 100GB but you can get away with less.

Can you run through the steps you've taken so far.

I would listen to Calico here because I don't mess about with VHDs. He and/or others would likely be able to help you much better than I would.

If you want to mess about with partitions still, I recommend latest Acronis Disk Director but there are plenty others too.

    Steps taken so far:
    1. Got Windows 8 ISO 64-bit
    2. Burned to a DVD-R
    3. Created a VHD, Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Right-Click on Disk Management>Create VHD 45GB
    4. Booted from DVD
    5. Went through installation, chose custom install, Command prompt
    6. Used diskpart to select and attach
    7. Refresh, chose correct drive
    8. Hit ok, Gave me error: we couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one.

There's nothing obviously wrong in the procedure you're using, but just to check, are you using an elevated command prompt?

I use a slightly different method and it may be worth giving it a try. Creating Bootable Virtual Hard Disks Using this method, there are a couple of options, for applying the image to the VHD, if you have AIK -Windows Automated Installation Kit - installed, you can use imagex, otherwis there's a powershell script available. Once you've got the installation finished - assuming this works - you can use the command line utility bcdboot to add the VHD to the boot menu.
