    Install straight to 8.1?

Hi, I have a Windows 8 key, but I want to install straight to 8.1 when I rebuild this machine. As far as I know I can't use the Microsoft tool for creating installation media because you need an 8.1 key, not an 8 key (which for some reason is different? No idea why though).

I'd rather not have to go through all the problems with patching 8 to 8.1 (ie installing all updates, then installing 8.1, then installing all updates, etc). Is there any way to do this?

Are there not 8.1 ISOs that I can just download?

Us ordinary people have to borrow from a friend, or get one off torrent. Any 8.1 ISO or DVD will work so long as it is the same version your key is. IE Core or Pro etc

If you have a retail key you can download an ISO from Microsoft Store, however this will not work for an OEM key

You'll have to use a generic key to start the install. You can goggle for these Keys they are only good to start the install you will need your Win 8 Key to activate.

These are the keys I have used not sure they are still good if not just Goggle for any new ones
    Windows 8.1 Single Language Y9NXP-XT8MV-PT9TG-97CT3-9D6TC
    Windows 8.1 Core 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT
    Windows 8.1 Pro XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB

And Yes your Win 8 OEM Key will activate the 8.1 clean install
Activate retail Windows 8.1 with Windows 8 Product key.

    Thanks mate!

It was a bit hard to find a non-cracked version (the original version has hundreds less seeds!). I don't know why MS don't just offer the DL, it's like they want people to pirate it... Regardless, thanks I did manage to find one!

may as well go for the 8.1 with update (or 8.1.1 or whatever it is called) ISO - it saves downloading the huge update and your WinSXS will end up smaller than the original 8.1. Generic keys are the same.

All the 8.1 update ones I can see are pre-activated. Do you know where I can download legitimate 8.1.1?

I could just download the cracked one then swap the key over I guess.

    Thanks genet, good info!

EDIT: For anyone else wondering how to get 8 etc, Download Microsoft Software Directly and Instantly - has all of them uploaded for direct download, very handy for the future!

I don't have a use at all for the metro screen. It's not a big deal as it only takes a click to get to the desktop, but it would be nicer if I had the choice of just going straight there. Do I? I've right clicked all over the place looking for an option like that. Haven't been able to find it.

Hello, I bought a new SSD to test out win 8. I've installed win 8 RP onto it from a usb and everything worked fine. Unfortunately after restarting the computer after setup, it boots straight into windows 7 without any dual booting options. Did I do something wrong?
