Best way to reset computer before selling

    Hi,

What is the best way to prepare my pc before selling?

Should I reset or restore? It came with W8 installed but I had upgraded it to 8.1. Ideally I would still like it to have 8.1 when I sell it.

    Thanks.

I use the Factory Restore feature included on many newer computers, puts the computer back to its original as-shipped condition.

Right, but that will eliminate the 8.1 update, won't it?

Yes but only if it did not come with 8.1. Same for any updates. The 8.1 Update is free from the Microsoft Store and you could reinstall if necessary but you may not want to do the setup that starts when a new computer is first started, let the new owner do it [or help them].

I would perform recovery too, but I would wipe the drive (not recovery partition) with wiping program as not to leave traces of personally sensitive files/data, passwords, and the likes on it, even if you sell it to a friend, for you never know what happens after that ownership. Someone savvy enough could recover those items.

I'd leave 8 on it to let the new owner upgrade if desired for after all it's free.
