Solved Upgrading from 8 to 8.1 after refresh

I have a neighbor's laptop that had multiple issues. One issue was a bad HDD, which I cloned and replaced. The other issue was the dreaded Compnent Store corruption /RestoreHealth failure. This actually occurred just after updates were installed. AUto install was configured and updates were installed and the machine went through a loop of Auto Repair failure. I got the machine back up and running, after which I tried all of the 'fixes' I could find for the various errors that occured. Each fix would eliminate one error and produce another.

The ultimate fix, of course, was a refresh, which removes all updates. /ScanHealth now reports no corruption, so all is well.

Now, I need to upgrade this machine to 8.1. Since this is a refresh of the OEM install with no updates, I'm guessing I'll need to install some or all of the updates for Win 8.

I am a bit leary, given the Component Store corruption was caused by updates!

Questions:

1.
Do I need to install all the 8.0 updates, or are there specific updates that will get me to the point of 8.1 readiness?

2.
When I do reach that point of 'readiness', will 8.1 be offered via WU, or will I need to go to the store to download it?

3. Do I even want 8.1, or would I be doing my neighbor a service by leaving him at 8?

4. Any other pointers or information that I should know?

Thanks for any help,
Salt

Update: I went ahead and checked for updates and installed all important updates that were available, so I think that renders this thread moot. My subsequent questions about the 8.1 update will be posted in the Updates & Activation forum.

Thanks,

Before upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store, you do not need to install all Windows 8 updates from Windows Update. You only need to install KB2871389 update, then you’ll be able to install the Windows 8.1 update via the Windows Store. Download and install KB2871389 update from link or from Windows Update.

KB2871389 (direct download link)
- All supported x86-based versions of Windows 8: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...5E-794177982162/Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x86.msu
- All supported x64-based versions of Windows 8: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...49-140AB1CF7B5F/Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.msu

But if you've opened the Windows Store and you don't see the Windows 8.1 update, then you will need to also install KB2917499 update.
