Hello everybody..

I was using Windows 7 about a month ago, then installed Windows 8 CP (dual boot), then now I installed Ubuntu 11.10. Everything gone fine till now.

Expect the boot manager, actually i have two boot manager

BOOT MANAGER 1 : Shows for Ubuntu and Windows 7.

If I select nothing Ubuntu will start automatically and it also gives option to choose Windows 7 loader.

BOOT MANAGER 2 : Shows for Windows 8 CP and Windows 7.

If I select Windows 7 loader from previous boot manager then I will see this new boot manager introduced by Windows 8. Here I have option to choose W8 CP or W7.

My query is that how can I remove the Boot Manager 1 and add the Ubuntu option to second boot manager so that I have only single boot menu from where I can choose all three OS.

Any help will be appreciated!

That might be the best you can get on a triple boot. Ubuntu uses the grub boot menu and w8 uses as far as I know a secure boot system (uefi) and I can't see it allowing ubuntu to boot using it. So you'd need the grub for ubuntu and w7 and the uefi for w8 so 2 boot menus.
I like to dual boot with ubuntu so I hope there is a way just to dual boot with w8 but I doubt it as things are now.

"without restart" --- that doesn't make sense!

I use EasyBCD also, but selecting a different OS always requires a reboot.

Since the OP is offline until late April, maybe someone else can explain to me how this can be done without a restart (reboot)!

He means if you have the win8 graphical boot menu - then selecting another o/s ( i.e. not win8 from that gui) requires a restart.

If you added boot menu entries with easybcd - you will be getting the text boot menu and not the win8 gui anyway.

I'm suggest you install in OS which you keep it forever (Windows 7, because Windows 8 still prerelease).
Yes, you can. If your Ubuntu version is 10 or newer, use this option (click "add new entry")
insert new os boot.PNG

Windows 7 Default

I have these entries in my W7 boot menu:
  • W8 DP VHD
  • W8 CP VHD
  • W7 Ultimate
  • XP SP3

No reboots are required to start any of these operating systems.

Yes as I said - you will only need to do that if you are using the win8 graphical boot menu.

NOT my experience. I added boot menu entries using EasyBCD and I still get the Win8 graphical menu.

But then, I did not change to Win7 by default. I think if you do that, you do not reboot anymore when you select an OS entry from the selection menu -- because you're using the Win7 boot loader, not the Win8 boot loader.

My Computer

Probably easiest to set win7 as default in msconfig.

At the OS selection screen

I was agreeing with you. :)

Uhm, uh, just how do you switch to one of the other systems without rebooting?
He means if you have the win8 graphical boot menu - then selecting another o/s ( i.e. not win8 from that gui) requires a restart.

The W8 boot loader makes you reboot if you try to start any other OS. :(

This is presumably to punish you for daring to use anything other than W8.
The W7 boot loader doesn't reboot, even if you select a different OS.

If you want to swap from a running OS to another, you still have to reboot.

Probably easiest to set win7 as default in msconfig.

The W8 boot loader gives you the option of changing the default OS.

If you want to get rid of W8 GUI, Don't Press Shutdown on Windows 8. Press Restart, select Windows 7 as default OS. Restart and you will get the old Boot Manager on Windows 7. If you want to shutdown from Windows 8, press restart, and in Windows 7 Boot Manager, press power button on your PC or notebook.
Do you understand?
