About a few weeks back i bought a SSD was 512GB and i did a clean installl of Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit on it.

Recently i noticed my BIOS Mode is UEFI. Before this upgrade to the SSD i had a 2 WD 1TB HDD and it was in Legacy Mode then.

I know i made no changes to my BIOS, before or during this upgrade to the SSD.

Just wondering what made this automatically do this, change to UEFI.

Can see it here too.

I guess you just got lucky, a lot of people have a real hard time figuring out how to do it. I just cloned mine over to a new Samsung 850 Pro I had to convert the new disk to GPT to get the clone to work?

I assume that means everything is alright, no need to worry.

Weird i belive when i upgraded to Windows 8 on this machine i was posting something about UEFI, that the system had it, why was i in Legacy mode, now out of it all i am here,UEFI mode, did nothing different.

  1. If your BIOS is set to work for both: UEFI+MBR then you can install in either style.
  2. When you did a fresh install. From the Installation disk, you have the choice to install using GPT style or MBR style and apparently you selected GPT style. See screen shot:

GPT I do not get it, for one i booted from the Optical drive using my CD of Win8.1.
At the boot screen i do not recall it labeled UEFI for a DVD Drive, thought this was only possible with a UEFI Bootable USB Flash
Drive, with Win8.1 on that.

No other partitions on the drive. Do you mean this system partition ? Besides the recovery partition.
Is this good or bad ? Should it be changed. I saw no selections that i recall during the install.

For newer MB, both GPT and MBR sre supported. You are good as is now. I have not seen an installation media, whether it's a DVD or a USB that does not have support for both styles. For DVD installation disk, it would show: UEFI:CD/DVD or CD/DVD in the fast boot menu. You can verify by booting your from DVD and in the fast boot menu, you will see 2 choices.

O.k. i tried booting just to see, but with no disc. I did notice in my BIOS now it shows UEFI as first boot, then Crucuial SSD, External HDD and DVD Drive.

Now from reading this can also only occur when BIOS is set to UEFI before a clean install, as said mine was in the Legacy mode.
Plus from my image i originally posted, the type is not GPT, but basic.

I thought this was for only drives over 2TB, plus some say faster boots too. Cons are rootkits can get in easier on boot.
I will try putting a DVD in and go to boot manager see what happens. By the way my Crucial SSD is only 512GB.

Both GPT & MBR are basic disks. By looking at the partitions, I can tell that you have a GPT style. With MBR style, you only have 2 partitions: 350MB Recovery partition & C: drive
With GPT, you'd have 4 partitions: 300MB Recovery, 100MB System Boot, a 128MB unallocated but hidden from disk management and C: Drive.
If you right click on Disk 0->Properties->Volumes. It will tell you that you have a GPT style, see screenshot.
Do the same for Disk 1, it'll show MBR.

I will try putting a DVD in and go to boot manager see what happens. By the way my Crucial SSD is only 512GB.
In addition, with UEFI, it will support secure boot and allow you to create more than 4 primary partitions.
Most of us use a 128GB SSD which is plenty for Windows OS.

BTW Thanks for responding.
O.k. i seen it where you told me to look, your are right. What is the unallocated 128MB used for ? Mine in Volume says 1MB.

I booted with the OS DVD and next to it was UEFI : DVD Drive. So basically by somehow selecting this, my system switched itself to UEFI ? My system unfortunately does not support secure boot.

Now tellling me another good reason have this is making more partitions ? Seems sort of useless being people did this more for HDD because took them longer to read larger partitions. SSD are much faster, seee no need for it.

Just trying figure out if this benefits me to keep it this way. And if i do, is it better for my EFI system.

In order for you to get the configuration you show, the install media had to have been booted into the UEFI mode.

If you feel your bios was not set to force that option, what bios settings are you looking at to make you think it was not set to a UEFI only boot option?

Thank you i understand that part, but how did it switch ? I know system has UEFI.

I looked for a setting in the BIOS, but i do not find one. Originally as said when i did clean install of Win8.1 with a WD HDD if i went to system information then, i saw Legacy Mode, when i go now i see UEFI. Never saw this UEFI in Boot manager then.

Seems i do not recall doing anything different this time then last time. But i do not know as much, why i am here asking you guys.TY

Thank you i understand that part, but how did it switch ? I know system has UEFI.

I looked for a setting in the BIOS, but i do not find one.
All bioses seem to have different configurations for setting a UEFI or Legacy or Both boot option. It may have a CSM option, which is disabled for Windows 8 Secure boot. If it is enabled, you can still set a UEFI only boot, as you might do for Windows 7. If you have a Secure Boot setting, it might give you options for UEFI only booting.

The H61 chipset was earlier than the Windows 8 introduction, so depending if it has been upgraded, you may see different options, or options which might even been changed by bios updates. The UEFI bios version, does make a difference also as to what options might be available. I have a Z68 motherboard which does UEFI fine, but is also not Windows 8 Secure Boot capable.

Well with that big of an SSD I think I would create a D:\ partition of about 1/2 of your disk space. There I would put programs and the library's Music, Download, documents pictures etc.
one good reason is refreshing your system drive is not a problem because your data is on D: Faster back ups and images of C: creating and restoring.

Thanks for all the replies, but i looked through the BIOS with a fine toothed comb, i see nothing that i know of that will change this to Legacy. Although one option i question months back was i believe not having to do with this was PCI ROM in Legacy, have to check this again make sure i worded it right.

Readings says should be a choice in boot order , when i press F8 at boot, for either say UEFI for DVD or one without it.

Basically i choice this i would say, somehow by accident, why i came to ask if it is best just left alone for Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit.
I did not choose it so i could want more partitions, reading about it is most peoples reasons to choose GPT.
Whether MBR or GPT either seems o.k. on UEFI, i know MBR is old standard.

Last BIOS update was 2012, long story go into, but also no major improvements to try any, most will say do not flash a BIOS unless there is any. As said, do not support Secure boot, which be good with i assume GPT also.

Now when i put DVD in i do not think i saw another option for DVD Drive, without UEFI, could look again, this would be only if i am looking to go back to the way it was with a HDD before without GPT.

Alright i did check the boot options during booting by pressing F8 with OS DVD in.

DVD Drive
DVD Drive w/OS DVD
boot manager
Generic Multicard
Crucial SSD
UEFI: DVD drive

So when i did this clean install i most likely chose the UEFI: DVD Drive, reason it switched the BIOS Mode to UEFI.
As i believe said by other members here.

Again, nothing in BIOS pertaining to this, on EZ Mode screen see the boot order as UEFI Boot Manager, Crucial SSD and DVD Drive.

Does not seem to boot any faster in this way. Shutdown pretty quick, say less then 10 sec., cold boot or restart takes 35-40 sec.
this could depend on other factors also.

Well figured how i got here. Oh that thing i mentioned before PCI ROM Priority, set to Legacy ROM, other choice is EFI Compatible ROM. Not sure what this is anyway or has to do with this topic.

Well one way to look at it is this, BIOS MBR is considered Legacy now! All new equipment is coming UEFI GPT! some of the UEFI interfaces have very friendly graphical BIOS like options. Its not new, new equipment has been being put out UEFI since at least 2012 my first experience with it and available since 2009 at least as per my Asus P7P MB. I put in a 3TB HD and it automatically put it GPT. Technology keeps moving along and we adapt.

So your saying i am better off with this setup then MBR ? I read enough about it. No great advantages, except if want a bigger drive then 2TB, or ability to make more partitions, booting from UEFI instead of BIOS.

Not much of it right now is to my advantage, something i read about being more secure with how it rights tables on drive compared to MBR, something about writing 2 so if one gets corrupted.

I've got a problem, I tried to install win 8.1, but my laptop has UEFI BIOS, so I made my USB bootable as ept for uefi bios (according to rufus' tutorial), I also had to disable uefi boot mode in bios (or something like that), I booted windows installation from usb, and I formatted my only partition (there are only left system and samsung_rec partitions) and it said "on efi system windows can only be installed to gpt disks" and I can't click on next button.
Please help me, what should I do? I am a total noob, so I'm going to need as simpler as possible tutorial
