No Operating System found after Windows 8.1 upgrade

Helping a friend on his Acer Aspire V5 laptop that was running an OEM Windows 8 to upgrade to 8.1.

After selecting the Upgrade to Windows 8.1 via the store, the system went through it's install procedure, however after it does an auto reboot, it gives you a blank screen with the message No Operating System found, in the upper left corner.

But, you can turn the machine off and back on, and it will boot just fine. However if you select restart it does the same thing "no operating system found", on restart and again you must power down and power back on.

I have searched for fixes, but all seem to point to some sort of re-install process. I am not to crazy about the idea of re-installing to factory settings or doing a repair back to Windows 8 and attempting to upgrade again, are their any known shorter fixes for this?

And if I do go back to Windows 8, and try to upgrade again, what is to say it won't happen again?

In the elevated command prompt run sfc /scannow to repair possible corrupt system files.

I wonder if could be something in the BIOS boot configuration (UEFI or MBR)?

That was the very first thing I did and it came back clean.. No problems at all, not even a bad cluster...

I just don't understand how a cold boot starts fine and a restart doesn't, that just doesn't make sense to me.

I have considered this too, I may just have to rebuild the MBR
... Since, it is not my machine, I have been trying the passive steps first.

You might try disabling Fast Boot, do a Cold Boot and put it back on.

I agree it may be related to some type of Fast Start or Fast Boot situation. There are also some Intel utilities which may have been used by the OEM to speed up your system, using a SSD type drive, or a special partition.

It could also be a driver situation. When you reboot, the driver may already be set up in the memory, but cold boots need to load it all again and Windows 8 uses it fast startup option as Nuccii mentions.

Thank you for all of the suggestions...

I tried everyone and they all failed LOL, however, after much searching I found a post that corrected the problem.
I ended up having to flash the BIOS and update it, and all is functioning well. It seems to be a frequent problem with this laptop, with early version bios.

    Thank you all again
