Hi

Had to replace my Asus laptop battery and the had a problem with windows 8.1 upgrade not starting goes to automatic repair then diagnose then unable to repair then start again. Put in windows 8 upgrade DVD but won't boot it , goes on automatic repair roundabout . Tried repair gives a required drive partition is missing , tried refresh gives the "drive windows is installed on is locked", tried command prompt but get "you need to sign in as an administrator to continue, but there aren't any on administrator accounts on this pc".

Regards

Mike

Your post is a little confusing. Has the machine been successfully upgraded to Win 8.1? Or were you attempting to upgrade to 8.1? To me, it sounds like you have Windows 8, and are unknowingly attempting to do a 'repair' with a Windows 8.1 upgrade disk, which is why it is saying the OS is missing (ie., 8.1 is not installed, only 8). Is this right?

Try holding F8 while you are booting the system and do a system recovery/repair that way.

For the password, just leave the user as administrator and the password as blank or empty (if it hasn't been setup).

Asus X58C originally with vista business (have disk) , upgraded hard drive to 750 Gb and installed Windows 8 Pro upgrade(have disk) in 2013, upgrade to 8.1 (download) earlier this year, working fine. Changed battery at weekend, now switch on goes straight to automatic repair, then diagnose . result = your PC did not start correctly - press restart etc.

Inserting Windows 8 pro disk makes no difference. Pressing F8 on boot does not work boot and esc gives a screen and boot and F2 gives a screen , exiting both goes to automatic repair diagnose restart loop

suddenly a new screen has come up and I have managed to get to a command prompt screen that says

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.900]

X:\windows\system32>

does that help ?

Ok, for one, if you were using this computer successfully before, there had to be an Administrator account, it is created automatically.

Just so I can be clear though. The machine was originally purchased with Vista, then you purchased a new hard drive, and upgraded to Windows 8 in 2013. Earlier this year you then upgraded Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, all of which were working fine. This weekend you bought a new battery, and this is when you started having problems, correct?

May I ask, when you installed either Windows 8, or Windows 8.1, were either of them clean installs? Or did you simply upgrade right over the top of Windows Vista? Because I'll be very honest with you, performing an 'upgrade', in my experience, is a crapshoot. Not only will your performance suffer dramatically, but the reliability of the machine will also be largely effected.

This is not to say all is lost, but if you have the option, and if in fact you did not do a clean install of Windows 8, now would be a perfect opportunity. That being said, let's first make sure that you are not having hardware problems - your hard drive mainly. Go into BIOS (probably hold down either F2 or the DEL key when you power on the machine), and check and make sure that BIOS is recognizing your HD in there. Now find the screen in there that has to do with "Boot Options". It will probably have your HD listed first. Change it to whatever medium you have the Windows 8 disc (either flash or DVD) and make that first, then pop the DVD in, apply the changes, save, and exit BIOS. Restart the computer. You should now be able to access some recovery tools/options. Allow Windows to run its System Repair tools and we'll go from there.
