I am trying to install Windows 8.1 onto a new PC a clean install. I boot from UEFI CD/DVD Drive with the windows 8.1 install disk in it and it gets to the "Press any key to continue" screen, I press a key and it just restarts my computer. Then I try to boot from just regular CD/DVD Drive it says Missing BootMGR.

I can provide you with any information about my computer that you need to help me. I just really need my computer running again and any help is greatly appreciated.

I've zero experience of UEFI but it would help others looking at this if you posted your make and model of PC.
I turned this up,
Anybody gotten the DVD to boot UEFI? - Microsoft Community

Clean installing from a regular drive shouldn't be an issue as long as the BIOS is set to boot from the drive.

The UEFI part throws me because I have zero experience of that... I would need it all in front of me to see what was happening.

OK, a bit confused here. Normally, to boot from the DVD you have to hit any key a few seconds after it starts to boot or else it tries to boot from the hard drive and you will get an error.

It is either that or you do not have your BIOS set properly to boot from the DVD drive.

When you boot from the CD drive the "press any key" part is what you should see first. You have to be quick, perhaps pressing the key rapidly. If its booting from the W8.1 install disc then you should see the moving W8 logo as the files load. I don't recall a "press any key" option when the disc is running. Do you see the W8.1 logo ?

You might need to use something like Minitool partition wizard, you can boot the boot disk and then convert your disk to GPT. Also you can after the window files load hit the F10 key and a command prompt will come up from there us diskpart to convert your disk to GPT then your UEFI install will complete.

Booting and partitioning of GPT for Windows 8:
1.Boot from the Windows 8 install media (You must initiate this boot from a device labeled as a UEFI device, or the installation of Windows 8 will produce an error that the OS cannot be installed to a GPT partition) These UEFI boot devices will have a prefix UEFI: "name of your device", and show as a boot option in your UEFI.
2.After booting to the UEFI device you see the Install Windows 8 screen, press Shift + F10 to open a command prompt.
3.Type Diskpart, press Enter
4.Type List Disk , press Enter
5.Type Select Disk # (where # is the number your drive shows up as), press Enter
6.Type Clean, press Enter
7.Type Convert GPT, press Enter
8.Type Exit, press Enter.
9.Close the Command Prompt window.
10.Click the "Next" button.
11.Click the "Install now" button.
12.Put in your product key and click the "Next" button.
13.Accept the terms and click the "Next" button.
14.Choose "Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)."
15.Select the partition and click "Drive options (advanced)"
16.Click "New" and then click the "Apply" button. Four partitions should appear. Click the bottom partition.
17.Click the "OK" button and then click the "Next" button.
18.From then on follow the on screen instructions till you get to the desktop.
Note: If you can't boot after the install you need to make sure the boot is set to "Windows Boot Manager" in the UEFI. Also, important info.

When you boot the DVD, there is normally a Boot Device Menu you can access using certain F keys, like F12 or some such for your system. With that menu, you should be able to see the UEFI configuration of the DVD. Select that option and boot.

You do have to be ready to hit a key or the system will move on.. But the message should be saying Hit a key to boot to DVD, not "to continue".

The DVD media does have to be inserted prior to booting or it will not be seen by the UEFI bios.

When you boot your DVD UEFI, you computer proceeds to install window files? if so once these files are loaded windows install window opens at that point hit the F10 key and you will get a command prompt where you can use diskpart to convert to GPT.

If you not getting to this point then you'll need to use Minitool partition wizard to convert your disk to GPT. You'll do this with the Bootable CD you make of Partition Wizard

It sounds like you have a 64 bit UEFI only version of windows 8.1

You don't need windows installed to accomplish either of these solutions. Use another computer to create a bootable Partition Wizard CD.

MLT, we seem to be going in circles. The bottom line is for whatever reason you don't sound like you are actually booting from the DVD. Don't know if it is the BIOS settings or you have a bad disc, which is highly unlikely for retail DVD, but always possible.

You are sure your DVD drive is functioning properly? You could try to create a bootable flash drive to see if that boots.

Of course you'd need another computer to do that.

I have 2 different DVD drives I've tried both neither work. Tried Bootable USB that didn't work.

I'm out of ideas too with this I'm afraid. You have the disc in the drive, and you have the BIOS set to boot from that drive first ?, in other words its at the top of the list... that's important. Having done that, when you reboot you see the "press any key to boot from the drive" message and you do... and it doesn't work.

Is that where we are at at this stage ?

If so them I'm out of ideas tbh.
