Lost my F8 Advanced Boot & System Recovery Options on Dual Boot

Windows 7 shines on!

On both my Win7/Win8 Dual Boot machines I have now lost both my Advanced Boot Options and System Recovery Options on F8. I cannot boot F8 after BIOS post or after selecting either OS from the Metro-style Boot Menu.

I tried running Refresh just now on my deskstop but it didn't reinstall these Options. I still don't have the Recovery folder in C: on Win8 although it is there on Win7.

Can someone give me the way to link these to F8 hotkey? It's obviously not being used now.

Thanks, Shawn -

I've got Win8 set as default but notice Win7 partition still holds the System Active flags and has the Recovery folder in its root. I've tried relinking it to F8 using SIW2's commands here but it will not enable use of an F key for System Recovery Options. Further when I use the additional options link at the bottom of the Metro-style Dual Boot menu it will offer Recovery options but if I choose any it will simply reboot without accessing them.

I tried Refresh to see if it will reinstall the boot files as Repair Install did but it seems it might not have even run correctly as everything is exactly as I left it with installed programs, etc which it had said it would remove. I wonder if I should try it again, Reset or just boot my DVD to clean reinstall to be sure it reinstalls the boot files? Could this be a bug on Dual Boot installs.

I realize the Recovery options are as close as my DVD but want to pursue this to learn how to reinstate them, if it's possible short of Reinstall. :geek:

If you haven't got win 8 winre.wim in recovery folder - then I don't think anything will place it there afterwards.

HAVE you got the 100mb, a win7 partition and a win8 partition?

If that is what you have , maybe win8 doesn't have anywhere to put its winre.wim.

Dunno - I never use that 100mb thing.

I do not have 100mb on the desktop on which I'm trying this all now..

I installed from boot to a second partition I'd shrunk. Why do you think 8 didn't update the 7 Recovery folder or create it's own in a Dual Boot - a bug?

I'm thinking about reinstalling 8 to see if it's something I did since.

Greg,

You might see if the shortcut below may work for you to boot to the Startup Options screen from within Windows 8.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorial...-menu-shortcut-create-windows-8-a.html?filter[1]=Shortcuts

Hi Shawn -

It is that same Startup Options screen that I can access now at the bottom of the Metro Dual Boot menu but when I choose any of the Recovery Options offered from it, it just reboots the computer. This makes me think something has happened to my install if this isn't being reported as a Dual Boot bug yet.

Yep, it can be used to select the "Troubleshoot" option for that. The only thing missing are the options to change the default OS and it's delay time.

After reinstalling Win8 in the Dual Boot I now have working Troubleshoot options from the Startup Options link on Dual Boot screen.

However I still have no F8 Advanced Boot Options with a Repair My Computer listing.

But the way it seems they've been subsumed into the various Troubleshoot options menus makes me wonder if F8 no longer exists in Win8?

OK - I don't think tap f8 to fire up winre is there anymore. ( Unless perhaps it only works if you have the 350mb thing - I don't have that )

I added it in as F9 using the rather convoluted oem custom bootstrap method.

It is a lot easier just to add it to the normal boot menu - Easybcd can do that .

If you do that with Easy you wioll probabaly get the text menu instaed of that UI thing.

With the text menu, you don't have to reboot to another selection.

Windows 8 seems to have moved winre.wim from \Windows\System32\Recovery and \Windows\SysWOW64\Recovery to the [active system volume] \Recovery\{guid}\winre.wim.

I have 3 {guid} folders, one for Windows 7, and two for Windows 8 -I guess 32-bit and 64-bit from the datestamps and the filesizes, and a logs folder.

I don't have the "system reserved volume" - it is also occupied by my main windows 7 64-bit boot volume files.

You need to make elevated permissions to view inside the Recovery folder.

Does shutdown /r /o /t 0 work to get the advanced boot options?

I can't run Windows 8 at present due to driver problems.

Once you get to the Troubleshoot option using the Startup Options Menu Shortcut, are you able to get to the Advanced Boot Options screen picking up below?

You might be wanting the Automatic Repair (startup repair) option though.

Yes, I think we all spotted that win8 tries to put the recovery directory on the active volume.

I don't know what happens if the active partition is the 100mb.

Anybody got that kind of setup?

I have it setup that way. I had Windows 7 installed first on the C: partition with the 100 MB System Reserved partition, then installed Windows 8 on the G: partition. I do have to have Windows 8 set as the default OS to run at startup to be able to have the newer F8 though. Otherwise, I get the older Windows 7 F8 one.

Where is win8 winre.wim on your system?

Does win8 winre boot up when you tap F8, or are you just getting bootim.exe loading?

I have win8 winre booting on tapping F8 or on selecting repair from advanced boot menu.

Thanks - it is not easy to tell if you are just loading bootim.exe or if you are actually loading winre.wim

( you can check - bootim.exe is in system 32 - just run it from within your booted win8 - to get out of it - ctrl+alt+del for task mgr and end task).

I'm not sure either now. This is what I get when I run bootim.exe in Windows 8.

From within a VM.
