After upgrading to 8.1 i see two recovery partitions:
see attachment

Can anyone tell me the difference between each, or how to find out if i need both.

Secondly,
i have a recovery USB flash drive which has boot efi and sources, but the latter is empty. Should i redo that to copy one of the two recovery partitions? (it's 3.7 GB).
Note: i also have 4 DVDs of media recovery, and a single system image on an external hard drive. Not sure how these are related to use of the USB drive,
Where is the best description of a recovery process to follow in case of losing a C:drive? :)

After a fresh install make recovery image and save it where ever you want make partition in ntfs formated drive because, it's faster.
I did not not saw recovery partition like that before.
may be because I do not make back up install windows freshly every time:)

I can't see your attachment, but if you did an 8.0 to 8.1 upgrade earlier than about June 1, you will probably have a small Recovery partition after the OS partition, which is the active one. If you want to do a Reset, doing it from within Windows 8 is you best option, assuming it works.

Having a Recovery Drive made after the update would also help and give you another option. Do not remove the Recovery Image partition, unless you understand what it is and how to recover if it is missing.

Since I don't have Word on this system, I can't see the .doc file either, but I will check it with one of my Windows 7 systems.

Now that I can see your .doc attachment, it appears you have been reconfiguring your partitions. Since the Recovery Image partition is showing as OEM, I am guessing your Reset options will not work.

If you get a chance, please do a couple of things. Open an Administrative command prompt and

1. run reagentc /info and copy and paste the results.

2. run Diskpart and copy and paste or use the snipping tool to take a picture and attach using the paperclip on the Advanced Replies.

Diskpart
list disk
sel disk 0 <- Disk number of your OS drive.
list partition

exit to leave Diskpart.

Saltgrass,
Thanks for your reply.
1. & 2
see attachment "partitions.doc"

3. i havent done anything to change partitions myself directly..
a) i upgraded from 8 to 8,1
b) i created a USB recovery of 240mb (not shown at the time)
c) i created a system image on an external disk drive using win 8.1
d) i created 4 dvd s recovery media as per HP instructions
e) i have just run aomeb system image backup to an external drive...intending to use it instead of win 8.1 process

Everything appears to look normal. I wanted to check the partition that says OEM since there had been issues with those earlier, but yours shows a drive letter, which is different from the others.

But the new partition is normal after an 8 to 8.1 update, unless you have done an update since June 1.

Saltgrass, thanks for confirmation that this is "normal". That solves the partition question.

I remain unclear what to do in a recovery process, depending on the circumstances.
When do i use the 1023 recovery partition, and when the 450?
How can i see what's in each?
Given that i have a system image on an external disk, and recovery media, is the D recovery image superfluous (i don't intend to delete it, i would just like clarification).

As long as you are in Windows 8.1, the 450 MB partition will be primary. If you were to Reset to Windows 8.0, and it worked, the 450 MB partition would no longer be necessary as the original partition would become primary.
