Secondary Monitor not being detected in Windows 8.1

I recently received a second monitor for the use of a secondary monitor, but it has a VGA port and no DVI port. This was an issue because my graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760) does not have a VGA port.

I purchased a DVI-D to VGA adapter (turns out it was a 5-pack) and it is not detecting it.

What should I do?

There are different types of DVI ports. DVI-D is digital only, no analog. Connecting a DVI to VGA adapter to that port will not work. It has to be a DVI-I, integrated, which has digital and analog. Video cards with two DVI ports will often have one of each. If yours has two DVI ports try moving your adapter to the other port. There is no electronics, other than some wires, in a DVI to VGA adapter. It just picks off the correct pins and feeds them to a VGA connector.

The DVI-I is the one on the left in that picture.
