Solved Laptop partition raw, no restore disk, have options but...

I have Grandma's Asus Laptop with 8.0 OEM, while trying to fix the bootloader, I messed up the partitions with diskpart, etc. (I do not have the recovery on 16 gb stick)

The laptop is UEFI w/GPT currently. It has a 500 gb hard drive.

1. Can I just reformat and use the system builder edition (from a friend) with the generic key along with downloading the drivers to reinstall?? Or use DBAN as I suspect my nephew had a rootkit infection.

OR

2. I have a New hard drive (500 gb) that is still in the box, if I use the new disk instead, will the 8.0 builder create all the correct partitions on it's own as long as I enable CSM, disable fastboot, but leave UEFI enabled?

Please help me get started. I have read so much that my head is spinning.

***Please help me either fix my partitions or help me reinstall.***

Thanks in advance!

I did not go through all the link topguncp gave you, but I have recovered drives where the Diskpart Clean command had been used. If the clean all command was used, the partitions are probably not recoverable.

I used Partition Wizard to recover the partitions. The trick is, the software has to know before you attempt to recover the partitions, that the drive is configured as GPT. So I booted into the Recovery environment and used Diskpart to set the drive as GPT. I do this from the Recovery Environment so that the MSR partition is not automatically added. Then booted into the Partition Wizard CD to recover the partitions.

To boot to a non-uefi media such as the Partition Wizard CD, you have to set your bios for Legacy devices bootable.

Doing any type of recovery like this is dangerous. But if the recovery does not work, you have lost your data anyway.

At this point, I just want to get the computer in a working state I don't need to recover and data. Of course I would prefer to be able to extract the original key from the bios, but I can't figure how to run RW everything from a usb or external media.

I am great at getting rid of infections, but obviously know nothing about hard drives and partitions!!

Step by step that Got me to where I am currently:

When I got the laptop it wouldn't boot into windows, I tried refresh and reset and it ended up in a loop. I got my hands on a repair /dvd but wasn't sure if I should boot in uefi or just select the dvd to boot from. (Legacy was set to on)

Then I did this fix (incorrectly) I think, by following these instructions:
"Fix by Vonnie"

1. Assign the Drive Letter
Let’s say your EFI partition is on Volume 3, the next thing you would type is:
sel vol 3
Then assign an arbitrary drive letter to the parition. Let’s use v.
assign letter=v:
You should see a message saying: DiskPart successfully assigned the drive letter or mount point.
Exit the diskpart tool by typing:
exit
You should still be in the command prompt but outside of the DISKPART> prompt.
2. Repair the Boot Record
We need to repair the boot record. We can pull that off like so:
cd /d v:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\
bootrec /fixboot
The CD command tells the command line interpreter to change the directory to the volume label that has the EFI boot record.
Then the bootrec /fixboot command attempts to repair the selected volume.
Alright, still with me?
3. Rebuild the BCD store
Now we need to recreate the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store, so let’s backup the existing store first
Type:
ren BCD BCD.old
Now that we backed it up, let’s recreate the BCD store:
bcdboot c:\Windows /l en-us /s v: /f ALL

***NOTE!! I selected volume 3 and used the letter V***** <<<< I didn't really know what I was doing!!>>

Then when I rebooted I got this error which I didn't have before I followed the above instructions:
The Boot Configureation for your PC is missing or contains errors.
File: \EFI\MICROSOFT\BOOT\BCD
Error code: 0xc000000f

:( UGH, I need help, I just keep making a bigger mess!

Finally, I got a copy of Windows 8 x 64 from my friend's local computer shop (HRM_CCSA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV5) that I figured I could install with a generic key, then afterwards, run rw everything or one of the other programs to get my key from the bios.

Again, Not knowing what I was doing, just assumed I could put it in and run it, but at this point the computer can't find the original OEM windows installation. NOW, I have an unknown "RAW" partition". I know that my stupidity messed up the partitions!

Here is what they look like now via Gparted:

current state partitions gparted 6_26.JPG

Easy Recovery Essentials shows unknown windows:

no os showing.JPG

Diskpart showing raw:

current with raw.JPG

I also have a copy of: en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso , that was sent to me by reliable source and I also downloaded the enterprise edition trial HRM_CCSA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV5.ISO

I know this is UEFI with EFI and GPT, but all that is over my head. Please help! I promise to give back to the community! I have several recovery disks at my disposal that I can help others' with. I am not a taker, but a giver!

I don't understand partition's and how to edit them. Mr. Saltgrass??

EDIT: Going to redo the iso on a CD, it doesn't like the memory stick. It allows me to choose it as a boot option, but then ask for the
CD/DVD.......so going to do that real quick.

skip the info below!

Ok, I Just downloaded it to a 4 gb stick using Rufus as UEFI, now when I boot, should I select UEFI? Also, how do I fix the raw partition. Also since it doesn't know where my windows is, I think when I did the original bootloader fix, I selected the wrong volume, thus making my windows invisible?

Thanks for your help!

The disk is alredy gpt, so any decent partition manager may be able to recover that partition for you.

You will need it on bootable media, of course.

You could try the one from PW Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition ...

Sorry about replying to my own post, probably not polite, I apologize! My c drive doesn't know it is my c drive, I think??

I am in partition wizard in safe mode, here is a pic (Hope it's clear enough) of my broken system.

This is list of partitions after above fix:
From diskpart, I did not see any RAW disk as you mentioned but I know for sure the disk type is GPT instead of the legacy MBR type.
and a normal Windows 8 installation would look like the screen shot below:

GPT.png

Since your Windows 8 OEM comes from ASUS, they modified all the partition sizes so they could include their own software in there such as the capability to recover back to the initial Windows installation from the 20GB Recovery partition by pressing function key F9 at boot time (got this info from their website manual). So if the software from the Windows Recovery Partition (600MB) still any good then you could try F9.

Here is what they look like now via Gparted:
When you boot up from it. Did you select EFI mode ? you also need to set your BIOS to EFI.

Easy Recovery Essentials shows unknown windows:
Some of the earlier software does not support GPT disk type and I am not sure if this one does. If it does not support GPT, it might show as unknown or RAW.

At this point, I just want to get the computer in a working state I don't need to recover and data.
If F9 key does not work. Just use diskpart and delete the partitions: E:, C:, D:, F: and G:
  1. Make sure you set the BIOS to EFI type and if Secure Boot is enabled then disable it.
  2. Plug in the Windows 8 USB then boot up the Laptop, at boot screen repeatly tap on ESC key to get to the Boot Menu
and select to boot Windows Installation with UEFI mode
  3. On the very first screen of Windows 8 Installation, hold SHIFT key down and press F10.
A Command Prompt should display. Continue to step 4.
  4. diskpart <enter>
  5. list disk <enter>
  6. select disk # <enter> # is a number of the disk e.g 1
  7. list partition <enter>
  8. select partition # <enter>
  9. delete partition.
  10. For F: and G: you need to type: delete partition override
  11. AT this point, you have an unallocated partition and a partition containing your manufacturer Recovery partition (Your Windows 8 OEM)
  12. Type Exit <enter> to exit diskpart and close the Command Prompt. Click Next.
  13. Then follow the instructions from Windows installation.

NOTE: If you have the same version of Windows 8 then it should read the key from BIOS and activate automatically

Good Luck !!!

In Partition Wizard, when you select to recover partitions, the software scans the drive and shows you the possible partitions to be recovered.

It appears you have recovered all the partitions except the OS partition. If you have run the partition recovery, does that partition show as being selectable for recovery?

Don't worry about drive letters from the boot disc.

Run partition recovery module, select Full Disk, Next, Quick Scan. When it has finished, tick ALL the partitions you want and then click apply.

Aomei part assist also has a good recovery module in the free (standard) version, biut you need to run it to create winpe media.

PW has the Linux one already made.

Thank you for all the responses. Last night I tried to recover the partitions, but it couldn't recover them.

I think my best option is to wipe and reinstall with (en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso) that will supposedly pick up the serial no in the bios.

I have the above .ISO copied to a USB drive using rufus to format it in EFI mode with GPT partitions.

Now, how to delete the current partitions (including the raw one) and should I leave the recovery partition on the drive OR copy off the recovery partition onto an external hard drive and delete them all?? OR do I need to copy it at all?

I'm a bit scared of the diskpart options typed up by topgundcp, as me messing with diskpart started this whole mess. (I think the lettering confuses me because I don't see all the letters he mentioned here:

Okay, so here are my bios pics:

bios secure boot disabled.JPG boot uefi first option.JPG

Double checking, my bios should be CSM enabled, Fast boot Disabled and Secure boot disabled. Then, boot up with the .ISO created above in Rufus (EFI w/GPT partitions)

My only option is to use the command prompt to do what I need to do with the partitions. So, in a second, I am going to upload the state of my current partitions and hopefully you can help me delete them as topgundc mentioned above. Or, I may need more help.

Thank you all so much!

Finally! I was having a problem with the Shift + F10, I was hitting it too soon and my computer was going into automatic repair, which it can't do because my "C" drive is RAW.

So, once I saw this pic install windows start page.jpg Then hit Shift +F10 same time, I FINALLY got my partitions with the volumes and assigned letters.

See here:volume with letter assign.JPG

I am documenting this for the next person who has no clue, to make it easier with the visual's. Now, I just need to know how to delete the partitions which have no letter assignment.

Do I have to assign them a letter, then delete them. Please advise....

Forever greatful :D

Yes, I probably should, but only have the .iso from local shop for 8.0 x 64 that will find the embedded key. I figured after I finally get it up and running and make a backup, then I will just download the 8.1 for free from Microsoft <fingers crossed>.

I'm too afraid of torrents, and only want to use what I know is valid install. Thanks though. I still can't see what you are showing me, at least not yet. I think I have to delete my current partitions.

I think I have to delete my current partitions.

Best option is delete all the partitions on the disk, because you can no longer use your manufacturer recovery partition.

Quote from this post: UEFI Boot Mode (installing using the GPT partition style) and Legacy BIOS Boot Mode (installing using the MBR partition style). -> link

Normally, you should be able to delete all the partitions on the Where do you want to install Windows? screen.

Note: But if you cannot delete all the partitions on the Where do you want to install Windows? screen.

- Boot the computer using the Windows 7/8/10 installation media.
- On the first screen, press SHIFT+F10 to bring up the command prompt.
- Run the following commands at the command prompt.

diskpart
list disk (this will give you a listing of the disks on your system)
select disk # (select the disk you want to clean, for example select disk 0)
clean (running the clean command will delete all partitions on the disk)
exit

Even if you are going to use the GPT (GUID Partition Table), you do not need to run the convert gpt command, since you are not creating the partitions at a command prompt.

- Close the command prompt window and continue your Windows installation as usual.

So excited to get to this point!

Problem though  It got to setup and as it was finishing up, I got an error: code 0x8007045d, couldn't finish setup.

I ran chkdsk on the USB I was using to install. I had already ran seatools test on the harddrive and it tested out fine??

What to do now??

I think I have to delete my current partitions.

Best option is delete all partitions on the disk, because you can no longer use your manufacturer recovery partition.

Usually you can delete all partitions on the Where do you want to install Windows? screen.

But if you can't delete all partitions on the Where do you want to install Windows? screen.

- boot the computer using the Windows 7/8/8.1 installation media
- on the language screen, press SHIFT+F10 to bring up command prompt
- run the following commands at the command prompt

diskpart
list disk (this will give you a listing of the disks on your system)
select disk # (select the disk you want to clean, for example select disk 0)
clean (running the clean command will delete all partitions on the disk)
exit

Alright, I won't give up! I am a terminal cancer survivor and while sick, I learned how to successfully disinfect machines and volunteered my time for free to the community for years. This is for my grandma, she is counting on me. I've had this for 6 weeks now!

This has a Toshiba branded drive, model # mq01abd 050, advanced format, 500 gb, Before the reinstallation procedure, I ran Several diagnostics on it. It tested out fine, but had to use Hitachi because Toshiba is lacking the tools I need (I think) This is not rebranded Fujitsu. Software Utilities

The error occurs at just about 99% before it gives me the following: error code: 0x8007045d

From searching other threads regarding the above error, it seems to be an I/O error. So I tried reinstallation (2 times) 1ST time with USB Sandisk USB2 or 3.0 compatible. I cleaned the partitions again and retried installation using the DVD ISO burnt at slow speed, because that error from my research is an I/O error. Most of the threads I found regarding Windows 7. and no solid answers. I believe it is an I/O error on the hard drive.

Should I start a new thread??

I just pulled the drive and I have a BlacX Thermaltake docking station that I can slave it to a Windows 7 desktop (not UEFI or GPT) via usb. Or, I can slave it to the computer direct. I know I can't boot into WIN7 directly and work on the disk (I read that somewhere). So, here are my options, but I need your expert help.:

1. Is there some way to reformat the hard drive keeping the GPT intact? Align the partitions or whatever I have to do?? Run a low level format? (If I do that, should I do it via USB, slave it or keep it in the laptop?

2. I have a new hard drive in the box, but I am not sure it is compatible?? It's a Hitachi 500 gb. Model 5K500 500 gb Sata 3.0, It's been hanging around here for a couple years! It DOES NOT say advanced format on it.

3. I do not have the recovery drive, nor do I have the serial no# from the bios. All I have (legitimate unused serial key) is a Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade disk, which states it needs a valid Windows 7 key to use it.

4. I'm not about building a fast system, I just need it to be usable for Grandma to use for emails and facebook, etc. She HAD a desktop that an elderly man took to fix for her, but he had a stroke and it's been gone 6 months, she has NO computer.

Please steer me in some kind of direction.

Thanks for your help and persistence!!

Finally! It was caused from bad sectors on the harddrive! Using Aeomei I did more thorough testing, so I bought a new drive and we have the system reinstalled!!

Thank you, thank you!!

Now, I have ONE last question, I haven't rebooted yet, is this when I change it back to secure boot, or leave it be?

Please advise, thanks!
