Okay, this is the problem im facing. Back in 2012 I bought windows 8 for 16 dollars from Microsoft online. I was using it on my laptop but it recently died. I talked to Microsoft to disable it on that pc and they did that. Now I have built a new computer. I am wondering on how to install it on there. When I downloaded the windows 8 installer and installed it on the usb it didn't properly install on the computer. It said drivers were not found and things like that. I then realized that it was just for updating from windows 7 and the others. After searching around on the web i found that i could use the windows 8.1 installer with a generic key but it doesn't seem to work anymore. It just says it cant connect to internet. I also dont have an optical drive on my pc so i cant use dvds. Now how can i install windows 8 on it. Anybody know?

BTW: I have windows xp on my ancient computer. That means that if i will have to do things that require higher windows versions, I will have to do it at my friends house.

If this would not work i could get my brother (Student at UVIC) to get me windows 8.1 embedded industry from dreamspark. Would i be able to install that?

I'm thinking you would have to run the $16 version from scratch as an upgrade from an existing version of Windows.

Does this mean that i cant install it onto my new pc that doesn't have an os? If so then would the 8.1 industry work?

Not sure how you would activate embedded.

You got your copy from MS , so they should be able to provide install media, if you ask.

Yeah, you'll need a valid OS to run the upgrade assistant, if you have one.
It'll be a long road to get to Windows 8.1 Update 1, but, for 16 bucks you'd have a great OS! :)
Can't enlighten you on the industry thing, sorry.

One more thing:
If you do go the upgrade route, whenever you're presented with the opportunity to save the iso, do it! It's pretty much your only ticket to a clean install method that you have control over.
Good luck. :)
