I trying to make a Windows 8.1 install disc so I can reinstall of windows on my computer. However I only have a windows 8 OEM key, I don't have any windows installation media or a subscription to msdn to get a retail download product key. The usuall work around method of starting the windows 8 iso download, stopping it and then starting the windows 8.1 iso download wont work because the product key I have is OEM.

Does any one know how I can get around this issue?

My OS version Windows 8 (updated to 8.1 update one) core 64-bit

Hello KTM,

Since you have a Dell computer, you could create recovery media using the method in the link below that can be used to do a factory recovery of Windows with.

Windows 8 - Recovery Media in 99 seconds | Dell

If you are unable to create the recovery media from your computer, then you could also order recovery media directly from Dell for your computer's model.

https://www.dell.com/support/diagno...260354&lid=4803075&DoNotRedirect=y&redirect=1

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

If I do that it will create a factory image which will be Windows 8 instead of 8.1. Also I believe the factory image partition may have been wiped accidently.

That's correct. It will restore the originally installed OS.

If you are unable to, then you could order replacement installation media from Dell at the link above, but of course it'll take a few days to get it.

Well then the only route is Torrent or borrow a disk from someone with the Same version you have Core or Pro Goggle for installation keys, activate with your win 8 key.
Then download Macrium Reflect and image your system so that you don't get into this predicament again.

I was trying to install just 8.1. I believe it would be better. Also it would probably cost just as much as buying a retail key.

I have tried looking but I keep coming to a dead end. Could you lead my to a site that would be helpful? I think all I need is a retail key for 8.1 core, so I could download the iso from Microsoft, and then activate with my OEM key.

KTM,

I think the only way other than ordering media from Dell would be to either purchase a retail 8.1, or ask a friend with one to download an ISO for you.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html

You could then use a generic key to install 8.1, and change the key to your OEM 8 key to activate with.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2299-clean-install-windows-8-a.html

I looked into ordering dell recovery media and was surprised to see that it was free, however, I was hoping to be able to just install 8.1; not installing 8 and updating to windows 8.1

Honestly I don't know anyone who upgrades their operating system. Everyone I know gets a new operating system when they get a new computer, so they would not have a retail key.

DELL do have 8.1 recovery media. You should be able to persuade them to send it to you.

Yeah, most OEMs will only provide discs that puts the computer back to the condition it shipped. If it came with Win8.1 like mine they should provide that set of discs but if it originally came to you with Win8.0 the discs will only restore to that version, anything added or updated after that is up to the buyer.
