I think I'll purchase an Apple computer

I have now tried twice to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Each time I have got to (what I thought would be) the final screen only to have it tell me that "something went wrong" (no error code!) - please restart the installation. Which I can't because there is no mouse pointer and it will not even accept Enter for the OK response. Nothing. (Not that I am sure I want to restart the installation anyway after a wasted hour and a half - twice). Not counting the downloading time.
So I turned the computer off and on again and it tells me it is reverting to my previous Windows (Windows 8).

So how do I get this process to work??

I have my Microsoft name and password and (several) security codes. It would not accept the latest security code I had so I asked for a new one - which I got from another computer since mine was in a frozen state waiting for the code to be entered (!). I entered that and all appeared to be well as I entered various options as and when requested - then it all crashed at the end.

The only "error code" I have is 0x8007042B - 0x4001F which appeared in a screen that told me that we have reverted to Windows 8.

What am I missing? What do I have to do to get this to work.

I would give up and stick with Windows 8 except that I have read that 8.1 will fix some of the things I dislike about Windows 8.
Or I could just go buy an Apple computer!

Thanks for both those replies . . . but I don't have a "retail key" - Windows 8 was OEM on a H{ Envy laptop.
And I don't have a clue what adding the additional cluster etc. means!
Sorry but I am not a computer tech - just an ordinary user who thought 8.1 might be a good move. How wrong I was.

That happens when you don't update your drivers to be Windows 8.1 compatible before you upgrade. Sensitive things like WLAN, Bluetooth, and Video chipset drivers if not update can cause this. But the most probable culprit according to my experience are the Bluetooth Drivers followed by the WLAN drivers

With that said, upgrading sucks, nothing beats a clean install of Windows 8.1

You said "I don't have a "retail key" - Windows 8 was OEM on a H{ Envy laptop.". You can't transfer OEM license to another computer really. Just sayin'

He never said anything about transferring his license to another computer.

I too searched for your specific error code, but am turning up NOTHING.

Only thing I can offer is make sure you have ALL the weekly updates for 8 installed first. Also as already said, be sure to have the current drivers for 8 or 8.1 installed if possible.

    What model of HP Envy?

AFAIK Error code 0x8007042 means Access Denied .. the rest may pertain to the particular "(several) security codes" you are using...thus may just mean permissions are not being correctly applied (well that's my theory anyway)

Just wondering how many use both Windows PC's and Mac's? I just purchased a Mac Book Pro this past weekend and am starting to learn all about how Apple does things and how OSX works. I'm only a couple of days in, but this device certainly has it's pros and it's cons.
