Hey!

I did a factory reset on my windows 8, and it messed up, not completing. so it is now stuck on a cycle of 'preparing automatic repair' and 'diagnosing your pc'.

And I today recieved the windows 8 cd to reinstall the os.

But after I've chosen language, I get error message saying I'm missing 1 of the media drivers.

How do I fix this problem?

all help is appreciated.

Note: I'm terrible with computers, so please don't give to advanced tips unless you give a small tutorial on how to do it, preferably with step by step guide

computer: alienware m14x r2 laptop

If you post the brand and model of your machine, somebody may have experience of that.

Have had to use my recovery DVDs 2 or 3 times.
Never a problem since they contain all that is necessary to restore to factory settings.

Have since been making system images with Macrium Reflect & so never needing the factory recovery disks.

Your disk should reset your computer to factory settings with no problems.

Why it doesn't work is a mystery. :(

Yeah, I've run a psa test a few times since the failed factory reset, and every time it does pass with everything detected. so i have no idea why it says i'm missing a media disk

I think you should contact Dell about this since you are still under warranty. :)

I think DELL are ok. Some oems rip you off $50 for recovery media.

If you want to do it yourself, you could just use regular 8.1 install media, as long as you d/l any machine specific drivers beforehand.

I would be interested to know what is on this Dell dvd. Is it about 5gb on a dual layer dvd?

I suppose there could be something wrong with the Dell media. The driver used to boot to a CD are in the bios, so not sure what it might be asking for, unless something in the normal OEM recovery system contained something.

Since the Reset did not work, and it appears you cannot try it again, have you added anything to the system that might give a reset problems? Are you getting any messages as to why the Reset will not run?

How many times has the system rebooted?

It is also possible he has been sent the wrong one.

NOTE: For the future, it is good idea to make images of your system. There is a built in windows system image, it is better than most people realise, but I wouldn't it recommended for beginners.

Aomei Backupper free Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7 Free Backup and Restore Software is your best bet. I use and it is excellent. Probabaly the best user interface out there, and it does a great job. More functions than any other free versions, too.

A new version will be out in the next few days.
