Lid closed unable to reboot

I’m having an issue where, with my laptop lid closed because I use my monitor, when I reboot my laptop it never actually comes back on. If I remember to open the lid in advance, there is no issue.

I have my settings set that when my laptop lid is closed, nothing happens.

Would you happen to have an alternative "Panel Open-Power On" utility installed on that machine?

I am not on a laptop, but I seem to remember some settings regarding what happens when you close the lid.. If you can find those, how are they set?

Is it required you close the lid all the way so as to depress the switch?

Do you have the system to use just the external monitor, or still using both?

Just to clarify:
When you say reboot do you mean 'wake', 'restart', 'un-hibernate' and how are you doing this with the lid closed?
