    I have a recovery partition, windows thinks I don't.

When I installed my copy of windows 8 using a dvd, It installed a recovery partition during the installation. This partition allowed me to do things such as create a recovery drive, and use startup repair, all without needing to insert an installation disk. For some reason, this recovery partition is no longer working. I can't create a recovery drive without being told to insert installation media, and there are no troubleshooting settings when I launch "advanced startup". I noticed this after I deleted all of the bcd bootloader entries in easybcd, and tried to create a recovery drive. I don't know if deleting those entries could have affected windows but I think it might have something to do with it.

The recovery partition is still there, and the files in it are still there.

The references to the Recovery Tools, are in the BCD store. If you removed them the system will not work, and it may or may not be easy to fix.

So start by doing two things. Open an administrative command prompt and type the following commands.

    reagentc /enable
    reagentc /info

Then copy and paste the results of the /info command in your reply.

Next, in the same Admin Command Window, use the following command and attach the resulting text file.

    bcdedit /enum all > %userprofile%\Desktop\bcdtext.txt

Maybe those will tell us something. You should be able to copy the command and paste into the Command window.

It's likely a side effect of the upgrade to 8.1. I've seen reports that the Store Upgrade to 8.1 breaks the factory Reset option. You have Windows 8.1 64 bit listed in your System specs so I assume you've done the upgrade. Your hidden factory Recovery partition has the old 8.0 factory image and you are now running 8.1. Your new recovery drive likely wouldn't work right anyway. At best it would put you back to your factory 8.0 install.

    Hi Chazm,
CONGRATULATIONS on having an installation disc., non OEM
easy way is just do a new install and then upgrade to 8.1, via the store.
as previously stated DO NOT remove BCD.
YOU DO not have to use the inbuilt recovery options, unless your refresh does not work.
