Boot the Windows 8 DVD instead of starting it from within XP. You can't do a true upgrade from XP to 8 so booting the DVD and doing a clean install, after backing up any data you don't want to lose of course, is the way to go. That way it doesn't matter what state the XP OS is in.

Exactly...

1. Before you begin

To upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows Vista or Windows XP, you'll need to install it from a Windows 8.1 DVD and perform a clean installation. This means you won't be able to keep any files, settings, or programs when you upgrade.

Upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows Vista or Windows XP - Windows Help

What that means is SP3 is irrelevant (not needed) since you're doing a clean install of Windows 8 anyway. In fact, you don't even need XP installed when installing Windows 8/8.1

With that said, perhaps you mean the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant? Which does require SP3 to be installed...

We recommend that you download and run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant to check if your PC meets the system requirements for Windows 8. If you're running Windows XP, you need to have Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed to use Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant. For more info, go to the Service Pack and Update Center.

The upgrade assistant can be downloaded from the same link above.

And here's our tutorials on doing a clean install of Windows 8

Good luck :)
