I got error when trying to install windows 8 consumer preview "setup was unable to use the existing partition because it does not contain the required free space. "I am trying to install on a separate partition, size is 100 GB. the drive is 1 drive separated into 2 partition. installation could not continue. then I tried delete the partition, make it into unallocated space, still not working. then I tried to merge the 2 partitions into 1 drive, now size is 200 GB, still the same message. how to solve this?

Disconnect disks 0,1 and 2 and try again. With that setup you get no double boot, but you change systems by changing the BIOS boot order.

I think you get this message because there is not enough space in your 100MB 'Z' partition. The Win8 BCD is pretty big and probably does not fit.

You could, of course, try to make Z bigger (e.g. 300MB). But that will require quite some gymnastics that you should only attempt if you feel comfortable with managing disks.

Another (easy) solution would be to move your bootmgr to C of Win7. Then there would be plenty of space. Bootmgr - Move to C:\ with EasyBCD - Windows 7 Forums

what is the purpose of moving bootmgr to c:\ ? will that make windows 7 unable to boot? will that solve the problem?

It does not matter where the bootmgr is. As long as there is a bootmgr, the system will boot.

The reason I suggested to move it to C; is that then there would be ample space for the Win8 BCD to fit. The 100MB partition is just too small.

I always move the bootmgr to C because I want to get rid of the 100MB partition which makes no sense in my configurations. You will not find a 100MB partition on any of my five Windows7 systems. Example:

Try this, download a trial of Winrar. During install, check box to handle .iso files. Open .iso with WinRAR and open the Sources folder. Double click on setup.exe, WinRAR will uncompress the iso in a temp folder and start the install. Select the partition u want to install to. Never seen this method fail...

Did you open the Sources folder and use setup.exe in that folder? Which partition did u pick after selecting custom install?

You must double clik the Sources folder in WinRAR and then double clik the setup.exe file to get the option for a customized install...the way u tried not custom install.

now I get to the custom install, still same error.

I guess I must do something with the system reserved drive or bootmgr.

for some reason your computer isn't registering the space for the volume, try giving it a name and rebooting...
