Hi all, I will be installing Win8.1x64 from scratch in my Asus P8Z77V-Deluxe mobo. When it comes to drivers, should I install the official ASUS provided drivers (the ones you download from their support website) or should I install the newer drivers provided directly from the manufacturers? Most ASUS drivers are "old", dated 2013 whereas manufacturer's drivers are current (2014). I asked ASUS support about this and as expected they recommended their official drivers, but still would appreciate your opinion, thanks!

What I usually do is: First I install core drivers (Chipset etc), last drivers from MB's manufacturer's site and GPU and sound from respective manufacturer's sites, ie. Realtek, AMD, Nvidia etc. Test after each install and make sure that System Restore runs before each install. It's more than likely that windows will install basic drivers during installation, especially if connected to internet at the time. I usually download all possible drivers before changing components, leave them unpacked in appropriate folders on a separate drive or partition so if windows get stuck at something I can point them to appropriate driver.
Read manual properly and carefully, down to exact version of MB and it's BIOS. Knowing exactly what you have is half the job.

Some say no, some say yes. My two desktop motherboards are older ASUS boards. For those I mostly go with the stock Windows supplied drivers. Sound and Video are about all I update. One has Realtek and the other VIA so I go there for the sound drivers. The both have NVidia video cards so I go there for the video drivers. Everything on the ASUS site is Windows 7 or earlier anyway for those boards.
For my newer ASUS laptop though I've hunted up anything I can find for 8.1. I went to AMD for the most current driver for my motherboard/CPU, its an AMD A-10. The ASUS supplied driver had issues with Windows 8.1, the AMD one didn't. Everything else though I pretty well got from ASUS. What I've noticed on my laptop is that just about everything works with the stock drivers but some features are missing. For instance, my touchpad worked but I had no two finger scroll. I had to install the ASUS Smart Gesture utility to get the scroll to work. Also my sound worked but didn't sound quit right and wasn't as loud as I remembered. Once I installed the Realtek driver it was back to full volume and a richer sound. I think there were some of my special function keys that didn't work either until I installed the ATK utility.

Thanks for your replies, I guess that the driver business is about trial and error, if it works and it's stable then leave it, if not update. Following this plan, I will start with the ASUS drivers and see how it goes. Initially, the only non ASUS driver I'll install from scratch is the Nvidia driver.

Yeah, some companies really "Shmucked" up with drivers. In some cases ordinary, original MS drivers work better than dedicated ones.

You don't normally get these frequent OS updates/upgrades and the need for frequent driver updates. 8.0 > 8.1 > 8.1 with update 1. Some got it right and some didn't. Laptops make it even trickier. Those with dual graphics can make getting video drivers a pain. Plus the special keys for brightness up down, volume up down mute etc. They don't always work with the stock Microsoft drivers. The drivers from the laptop manufacturer are often custom modified for that make and model so I go there first. On the plus side, if you go to the laptop manufactures downloads, you can usually find all of them in the one place. With a desktop PC you'll likely end up hunting in several places depending on what upgrades or add-in cards you've got. Gamers are even more keen to find the latest and greatest driver to get that extra frame per second. On my Laptop, that I don't game on, I go for stable and reliable. On my desktop, which I do game on, I'll spend a little extra time looking for the newest driver, especially video.
