I've searched all over and couldn't find any information on the topic.
With Windows 7, I have the following setup. The C drive is a 128gb SSD, which has Windows installed to it. The D drive is a typical HDD which has the Users folder.
I set up this arrangement by following installation instructions that involved using the Autounnattend.xml and the OOBE mode during the install. If you are familiar with this set up, it involved using the following:
There is really no need to move anything to the D drive imho. You will not wear out the ssd drive. W8 also has drive optimizer, which can be put on a regular schedule.
When running it, it says trimming the drive, so force trim any time you want it.
I am using two Intel 520's in R0, so I have no trim at all. I don't move any files off C drive in an effort to maintain performance.
The drives are more than capable of keeping up with newer FW's.
Having said that I am sure it is probably just a difference in how W8 runs that prevents that script from working. With the correct command it should be relatively easy to move some of the data to D drive.

I never change the default location of a user folder. I make new folders for Documents, Pictures, etc. in a partition of the HDD. I then right click on those folders and INCLUDE them into the appropriate library. Then I move all my user data to those HDD folders.
Advantage of that approach is that I get a clear separation of my own folders and those that are created by the system or some programs.
And don't worry about the write operations to the SSD. You are not going to wear this SSD out in the few years you care to keep it.
