    Issue with blocked screen and users at start up

    Two questions about Windows 8.1:

    1) When the computer starts up, the first screen displayed is a “blocked screen”, an image, from which I proceed by pressing the space bar.
    What’s the purpose of this step (other than delaying the start up process)? I don’t really grasp that, nor find it in the manual.

    2) I need to set up several users for the computer, some with a password and some without one.
    In previous versions of Windows the start up process first showed all of them, then I clicked on one and the process continued (asking for a password or not depending on who it was), and that was all.
    Now, with W-8.1, two issues here: First, it seems to require that all users have passwords. And second, it first shows only one of the users (not always the same); I have to click on an arrow on the left to see them all (another delaying, useless step ?).
    How can I set it up so as to have the quicker start up process of the previous versions, that is:
    - that it skip the blocked screen step (unless it is really useful - my 1st question);
    - that the first screen displayed show all the users;
    - that some users may not require a password.

    Thanks for any help.

    Well you'll save yourself a lot of grief if you'll install Classic Shell, that will bring back your start menu, turn off all the hot corners and allow you to boot to your desktop. To skip the lock screen takes a gpedit if your units are not running pro you won't have a Group Editor to edit with. There is probably a Registry edit to stop the lock screen.

    Click image for larger version
    With do not display the lock screen, you will boot right to logon screen user name and password. the straight to the desktop. I haven't looked at them tiles and other Metro crap in months.

    This helps you with the first part of your questions, and may solve the 2nd part. I don't know the answer. I do think you could look through the group policy for a setting, though I have never looked for this!!

    I think you can find a group policy editor that will get you past that stop screen anyway a quick google search found this How to Enable ?Group Policy Editor? (gpedit.msc) in Windows 7 Home Premium, Home Basic and Starter Editions? - AskVG
