Hi everyone,

I come across this forum when i was googling my problem. After a bit of digging, i cant really found any solution for my situation. And Brink seems really friendly, i decided to create a new post. Hope it does not trouble you guys.

My laptop is ASUS S46C, come with window 8 OEM 64bit. As a diligent updater, i gt 8.1 through the window store.
A few days ago, i gt error code 0xc0000185 with the BSOD. I borrowed a window 8 dvd and somehow able to bypass the problem without reinstalling the window.

But now the system seems corrupted or lack of some system files as explorer and firefox always freeze. But when i tried to refresh/reset the BSOD appeared again with the error code 0xc0000185.

I have tried to created an iso file but both the normal product ID and the product key i found by Belarc Advisor does not work. I guess OEM key is no use after all.

So can i know what are my options? Those freezes are killing me.

Thanks a lot for those who concern my problems

From an elevated command prompt type and run sfc /scannow.

If it cannot repair errors, run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then run the sfc command again.

It did work. But can you tell me the purpose of it?
Can i refresh/reset my system without any gimmick now?
Coz after scanning the hanging problem is still there.
i figured out the reasons for my freeze because the disk is always at 100%. Im googling to fix that problem now.

And actually i think the disk is always full because of the express cache. Anyone knows how to fix this?

The purpose of sfc and dism is to repair corrupt system files.

It would be a good idea to clean up your system using a program like ccleaner

Don't worry about your OEM key, it is embedded in your BIOS. You may refresh your system if you wish but be aware you will have to reinstall all your apps. Be sure to back up your data files before doing this.

The problem is i cant refrest/reset normally. Whenever i refresh/reset the blue screen of death appear with error code 0xc000185.
An alternative option for me is to reinstall window. But since win8 come with the laptop, i dont have a cd. And if i want to burn my version of window to the dvd, my oem key doesnt work.
So i guess ill make do with the error code and try to keep my disk unoccupied. Ill give ccleaner a try. Thanks

If there is a recovery partition in the computer, you may reset Windows to Factory conditions as when you got the computer. All your 3rd party apps will have to reinstalled and data will be lost so backup your data before you do anything. You will have to do the Windows update thing again also.

Failing that, you could probably order recovery disks from Asus.

Hi Lyncaoden,
Before you upgraded to 8.1, did you go to the asus site for your model???

There a loads of updates for that model >> prior << to upgrading to 8.1, including 1 for the express cache.

I would suggest you restore to factory default and then go to Asus site for your model, plus letter (1 of 3), do their updates then upgrade to 8.1

Roy

Hey Roy, sorry for the late reply

I tried to go to asus support site but there is not much there to update. On the other hand, there is ASUS live update pre installed in my laptop and everything is up to dated ( I never see new updates though )

And there is a new problem poping up : NVIDIA release its new driver yesterday and i failed to install it even in safe mode. ( compatibility is fine )

Supposed now i reinstall window 8, is my hybrid hard drive of 24gb ssd and 500gb of hdd be a problem? Like which part to install it?

Hey Roy,

Sorry for troubling you so much. I always thought window update would include all of those. I have update my bios, installed bios flask utility and nvidia. However the express cache is still causing the lag. I tried my window update and everything is still up to dated. Do you remember the update pack that fix the cache problem?

Hi Lyn,
its under utilities see screenshot, its for the >>> A model <<< which is yours???.
different rules for different models
Going back a bit you said you borrowed a cd, was it for an ASUS comp, if not it might have not installed all of thier drivers.

going back to asus update when you open it i take it you see this screenshot2.

Hope it helps

My model is s46cb.
There would be no driver update for express cache. In fact, i think my laptop is running on something called rapid start technology. Im not sure why there is express cache prog in my resource monitor ( in task manager )

Thanks Roy, its ok if youre out of idea. I guess ill google on this kind of prob

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R Touch Screen that has given this error, and I have the system rescue disk and a Windows 8 Installation disk...the issue is that even though I get the BSOD with the 0xc0000185 and the three choices of actions, I cannot get the system to boot from DVD or boot into Safe Mode...it simply returns to the same BSOD...so the CLI options would appear to not be available to me at this time.

Any suggestions besides a wipe of the hdd and a complete clean installation? and maybe moving the person who owns the laptop to linux...:-D
