Upgrading Win 8 to Win 8.1

I'm not a techie person. just a few question before upgrading
    1. I'm currently running win 8 64bit. Is the one in the Windows Store 64 bit also?
    2. My Laptop comes with a pre-installed Win 8. Do I need to put a Product key in upgrading to 8,1?

    64-bit Windows 10

Hello win8userhp, and welcome to Eight Forums.

No worries. It'll be an easy update to 8.1 for you.

Q1) The update will be 64-bit as well since that is what you currently have installed.

Q2) You will not be asked for a key during the update. Just for FYI though, preinstalled Windows 8 on OEM computers have the product key embedded in the UEFI/BIOS firmware, and will be auto detected and entered during installation.

First, make sure that you have all Windows Updates installed. Afterwards, Option One in the tutorial below can help walk you through the update to 8.1 via the Store.

Since Windows 8 and 8.1 are different OS versions, some folks who encounter some type of problem are having trouble Refreshing or Resetting their installs. You will not have the Windows 8.1 install files available, unless you know of a way to capture them during the update or shortly after.

So, make and keep any Recovery media suggested on your system. The day may come with you need to boot to that media if Windows encounters certain types of problems.

As soon as possible after you upgrade to 8.1 make a Custom Refresh Image. In doing so you will be able to use the Refresh Feature while staying on 8.1.

That is pretty big even for a partition that has the OS recovery. Who knows anymore with these stupid recovery partitions. That's right, they are stupid. I long for the days when we actually got a disc.
